Here's a crazy place that you've never heard of before.

For this episode, I headed to Beaufort, South Carolina, population 13,404. It’s always called one of the best places in South Carolina. It’s a big tourist town, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live here.

I went through downtown Beaufort, checked out some of the nicest parts of town, and drove through some regular neighborhoods. Then I talked to someone who has lived here for a long time and got his perspective on what it’s like here.

Where is Beaufort? It’s on the South Carolina coast, about halfway between the very southern cities of Charleston and Savannah, Georgia. This whole coastline here is one big tourist stop. Just about all of Beaufort sits on a series of islands surrounded by low lying marshland. Even though it’s right on the coast, there’s not really a traditional sandy beach nearby. But it really is pretty.

It's the perfect Tiny Town 2.0

Beaufort does have beaches. We have the famous Hunting Island beach with a light house
  • I was stationed in Beaufort from 2003 - 2006 and loved the small town feel so much that I purchased a home. I retired in 2019 and decided to move back. I love my neighborhood and the city.
  • I lived on Lady's Island for 2 years, and I loved it. I went to Beaufort all the time. Hunting Island state park was one of my favorite places to go. My son was an instructor on the rifle range at Paris Island. That gave me access to the base for shopping. My favorite thing was driving through the country looking for old cemeteries. Wonderful place to live.
  • The Beaufort lady was amazingly articulate and full of information! : )
  • My wife and I moved to Beaufort in 2005 and built a new home in the Seabrook area (46 Seabrook Point Drive). Hate to say it, but after three years I had no friends at all. The military people were in and then out which is understandable. Many others had moved there ( I assume ) from northern states, and there was the crowd whose families had been there for 300 years. If your family had not been there for at least 100 years you were an outsider. I am not saying all those people were unfriendly, but we always felt completely ignored. After three years of this we moved to Camden South Carolina on Lake Wateree and have plenty of friends. Beaufort is a nice place to visit.

Has anyone ever read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"? While the majority of the book is set in Savannah, the Garden of Good and Evil was located in Beaufort.
  • Fascinating place. Quite a change from all of the sad places you usually cover. Great job Nick!
  • The most enjoyable week of my life was spent downtown, the storefronts turned into bars at night opening on to the waterfront..it was so magical.
  • I have been to Beaufort several times and love the downtown area. I was surprised that you did not mention that Marine base Paris Island has a huge impact on this area and like most military towns not everything that comes along with a military population is good.
  • Beaufort is my hometown. I grew up here! It's not much but it's beautiful and there is alot of good stuff here and the people are generally nice!
  • Great job Nick! ❤️Floating Assisted Living! Love your comments. Thank you!
  • Beaufort was a great small town. It has been ruined with the influx of norther retirees. we once had pristine roads and waterways. We now have traffic chocked roads, waterways full of boats and higher taxes. For a local it is heart braking to see what has happen to once a nice small town.

I visited Beaufort about 30 years ago and loved it. My neighbor owns a condo on an island nearby. I would love to go back again.

you should have gone to Hunting Island Beach, where they filmed the Vietnam scenes in a small indie film called Forrest Gump
  • Nick Johnson Beaufort does have a beach near by. It’s called Hunting Island. You should check it out.
  • I love the information you provide and your personality is the icing on the cake. I enjoy watching your videos, you make me smile and laugh.

Nick, I must say, you are very good at your job, you tell a story the way you explain the area you are at and you know exactly what I knew living in Santa Barbara for a couple of years you are point on. That is why I enjoy your videos, I know there must be a lot of preparation that goes into your YouTube. Thank you so much for sharing. I like traveling, however, when I do travel, we cannot hit all of these places you take us to. So again, thank you. 😊
  • True, Mallory Beach did die in the water there, (Archers Creek) but all the rest of it was quite a ways away.. Hampton county..
