IAFI LLC Burgel Kayak Lecture

Published 2022-05-13
A truly intriguing flood lecture delivered by Bill Burgel from the perspective of his kayak and the course of the Columbia River.

Bill Burgel has kayaked the entire length of the Columbia River from Grand Coulee dam to the mouth of the Willamette River in Portland. His slide show presents a great overview of Missoula flood features that can be viewed from the river. In 60 minutes, Bill covers quite a bit of territory (to say the least) and gives a wonderful and very accurate explanation of where and how the floods have left their mark on this region.

Bill has degrees in engineering and structural geology from the University of Michigan and Idaho State University. He worked in various capacities within the railroad industry for the past 48 years, including evaluating and monitoring earthquake risks to railroads in the Columbia River gorge. Since retiring in 2010 he has used his geology background to help people become better prepared to survive an earthquake emergency and to better understand the flood-based geology that surrounds us.
