Ryan Noach is the CEO of Discovery Health, a company which covers 40% of those South Africans who have private medical insurance. Not surprisingly, he has been analyzing and attempting to bring rationality to the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill since it was first announced in 2007. In an interview today Noach expressed concerns about the NHI Bill that was voted through Parliament this month, particularly Section 33, which proposes the elimination of companies like his once the NHI is fully implemented. For the rational mind, alongside the guarantee that NHI will bankrupt already fragile South Africa, the most worrying part of this discussion is the ANC’s roadblock approach to all counter proposals - particularly scary considering the destructive record of every SA State-run enterprise. On the upside, Noach says even in the State’s best case scenario (ie no Stalingrad legal challenge from the private sector) it will be decades before the proposed NHI would be fully implemented. By which time, Parliament - and voters who put members there - will surely have come to their senses. Noach spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews.

He should just donate money to Solidariteit. They have the patience, skills and know how to deal with these pesky short sighted people.
  • @louisjwiese5515
Uh... Didn't Discovery initially publicly support this crap?
  • @kobusvanstaden3747
The same guy who told us very recently not to be worried about this..? Joker...
  • @Escapeismclipz
Discovery was supporting ANC and NHI, now they are crapping themselves. Careful what you wish for or pretend to wish for Corporate SA 😂😂
  • Wish Alec would have pressured him more. They are 100% in the game! And he knows it And maybe ask him why they haven’t addressed 💉 injury? Why they pushed 💉 and told everyone it was effective and safe but now it’s clear Discovery are dead silent on all things to do with the last three years. What a shameful bunch

This Noach guy recently said we shouldn't panic about NHI less than 2 weeks ago, and all of a sudden he flip flops. I will only believe him if Discovery stick to their word for good.

I can see how more people wil stop paying tax, more investments leave the country and more people emigrate.

The food analogy is spot on. To my mind the government must first demonstrate its bona fides by getting the existing health system back on track. Then we can start moving towards a NHI. Regrettably however I read in the news today that six months after discovery Thembisa hospital staff who helped the R1 billion tender mafia are still at work.
  • Very limp argument and reasoning by Discovery - it's not about fighting back against insane proposals and decisions for them ; it's about sitting comfortably and watching from the other side of the fence. Action and a decisive retaliation is what is necessary in order to halt the madness- in ALL sectors.

We may as well all declare bankruptcy as no small to medium size business would survive the tax burden. Unemployment will skyrocket, medical professionals will leave & taxpayers will riot!
  • @georgeg5559
Isn't Discovery charging more for less for the past six years (at least)?

A smart guy who does not understand that you cannot negotiate with communists. Sad.

The anc does not listen to anyone. They are the problem in SA, not the solution. Nobody can get through to them. They are like a little child , destroying its toys. The Post Office, SAA, Escom, Denel. Now that these are all broken to pieces, they are focusing on whats still left. All we can do is to stand together and remove the remaining toys from their little hands

He says people should have the choice, even if the choice is available not many people will be able to afford NHI coming off their salaries (Which will be a forced deduction) and still having to pay for private medical aid. The rich will still be able to afford both or if they don't have a choice will just get their medical treatments done in another country.
  • @MegaSacred123
We must take this guy seriously after the entire covid jab controversy???
  • @ianferguson4728
And what happens when they loot the coffers? The rail system is destroyed, the roads are in a state, they have almost destroyed Eskom, they destroyed SAA. How they going to administer the NHI system.
  • @metalcake2288
A good medical aid is nearly R3000 a month, more if you have a family. You're telling me, that some could just pay 10% on UIF and get the same cover? Sounds a bit sketchy.

The toxic collision of ANC (Politicians) and Big Business (Capitalists) is now feeling the pinch, these two coming together have halted the economy from opening doors for new players in different industries. ABSA, NEDBANK, STD Bank, CAPITEC and FNB have no competition it's easier for them to collude and fix pricing so is all other industries where its only a handful of companies that own all the spaces. The ANC has made it impossible for new industrialists and new talent to enter the market with red tapes to make sure you don't challenge capital that has been benefitting since apartheid era to date. i am not shocked that it has come to this, now the ANC is trying to get more votes by trying to please the poor.
