Tribal Youth and Chiefs Celebrate Jim Thrope Day with Flag Football | Kansas City Chiefs

Published 2024-04-16
This weekend, we invited tribal youth from Boys & Girls Clubs in Iowa and Kickapoo to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for Jim Thorpe Day! We honored one of the greatest athletes of all time with some flag football and a workshop in the Hall of Honor.

Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac & Fox Nation, defined greatness in everything he did. He earned a spot in the Pro Football HOF and became the first Native American to become a US Olympic gold medalist

Recency bias keeps more from appreciating this LEGEND. Jim Thorpe: All American is available on Amazon for those who don’t know him well. They always talk about making a new movie about him but it never seems to happen.

I lived close to Jim Thorpe, Pa. I was very young but during the filming of The Molly McGuires we went to a extra call and we were not in the movie. We did score the autographs of both Richard Harris who was bigger than Sean Connery at the time but we got his autograph as well. My grandfather owned coal mines in Pa. I love the movie. I was very young but I remember some hairy times during those days. I remember some very late nights trips my dad took to help him. He, my Pop Pop was the first person one the list for Black Lung but died prior to receiving the treatment. That was 1971.
