Testosterone has long been seen as a metaphor for aggression, but is there really anything to the idea of the testosterone-driven male? Prominent scientists explain how subtle the hormone’s effects actually are.

Men with a lot of testosterone have long been accused of violent and competitive behavior. Now the image of the sex hormone is changing. Unlike in the animal world, the general statement "testosterone makes one aggressive" cannot be confirmed in humans, and recent studies suggest that it can actually even promote selfless behavior. One of the leading experts in this field is Jean-Claude Dreher from Lyon. He says his laboratory experiments show that testosterone does not make men aggressive but instead allows them to act in a strategic manner. Those who are more testosterone-charged tend to be friendlier towards others in order to bolster their own social status. British behavioral psychologist Simon Baron Cohen demonstrates how testosterone determines our gender characteristics when we are still in the womb. Meanwhile, his colleague Oliver Schultheiss from Erlangen has found out how testosterone can improve our learning abilities.

Ask any man who has naturally low testosterone, it’s a living hell. Depression, no ambition, no sexual desire. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
  • @Phuzz828
Surprised they don't mention the importance of sleep. Its vital.

Masculinity is not toxic! It's beautiful

Been on trt for 3 months now and it's the best thing to have happened to me. My energy and libido are back but, most importantly, no more depression or anxiety!

The fact that anyone thinks testosterone is “bad” pissed me off.
  • @kevlarkittens
I'm impressed this dude is a body builder, a medical student, and manages to keep a girlfriend.

The paradigm shift in our understanding of testosterone's influence on behavior is both enlightening and refreshing. This documentary challenges stereotypes and reveals the subtleties of this hormone's effects, emphasizing its role in promoting selflessness and strategic behavior. Thank you for this eye-opening exploration.

"and the level turned out to be about zero, that's a bit low"

It's not as easy as people think. Testosterone, aromatase, estrogen, cortisone, and many more chemically interacting systems are very finely balanced. If you change one, they all change and are affected.

High Testosterone is much healthier than low.

Excellent production. Just findings based on trials without any hype of bias. Well done!

Could have relayed all the information in 7-10 minutes. Lots of filler, repeated information, story line to build tension, stock video footage and background footage of interviewed scientists in lab coats with narration. They stretched out the story to fill a TV slot. Wasted a half hour.

This guy was a med student & was able to figure it out - AFTER a diagnosis of depression. The “psychologisation” of illnesses in Germany (& elsewhere) has become truly lethal. He’s a young, healthy man. It is so much worse for women & the elderly. It takes years longer for women to be taken seriously- often after it’s too late.

TRT saved my life. Depression, panic attacks and insomnia disappeared and my choesterol/BP levelled out.

I was actually more aggressive when my testosterone level was low. I felt bad and always felt like i was on the edge of going off. Starting testosterone injection mellowed out my mood and made me calmer. I am happier, calmer, much more at ease when giving myself injections of test and this has been for the last 7 years for me.

This documentary reinforces my theory of what is the most common sentence used by researchers...."More research is needed."
  • Highly informative & very educational about Testosterone & HRT, thank you so much DW!

Testosterone should never be thought of as "political", "dangerous", "domination" etc. It's about your health. You don't want through the roof amounts, you don't want a shortage. You want a heathy level and that's that.

I appreciate the documentary for 2 reasons 1. Not coming to a conclusion as various factors have a role. 2. Continuing the research to document the findings which might be helpful in future.
