I definitely feel you on the bystander intervention point. I see it quite often, but 3 years ago I experienced something I will never forget. We saw a man yelling at woman for having her dog sit on a public bench to take a photo. He then pushed her dog off and then pushed the woman. I was in shock, trying to comprehend the situation. His anger escalated and he punched her in the face. At the point i ran over intervened by pushing the man away, and so did my German husband. The man got scared and ran off. Later after my nerves were calmer I realized that I was more upset that not a single person, including the woman's husband stepped in to stop this violent man. Since then, every year the woman sends us a Merry Christmas message and a thank you for stepping in for helping her. I understand the reasons for not intervening (in order to not escalate a situation further) but disagree with it.

Lived in Paris and the indifference when something is happening on the metro or bus was terrible for me. I am South African and had a verbal attack on the metro by two drunks, had wine poured on me, and people sat there and watched until they got off the train. Only then did people then come up to me to ask if I was okay... I cried, in South Africa as much as there is crime, people don't stand by and just watch, if they can help they do!

Standing around and watching a person get attacked, graped, etc, speaks loudly about the morality and character of the people. Since we're speaking about Berlin, I'm not surprised. I suppose I'm just so used to Schopfheim. As an African American woman, I must say that at the end of the day, I do love Germany and look forward to making a permanent move.😊

I am German, I live in NYC now and I have no problem to find a Doctor and this is much better in the US then in Germany. I agree to all points you said! I
  • Unfortunately this is also occurring in the US where persons are being attacked, and no one intervenes. Instead someone videos the incident

From my experience, it had only been the bakeries and small shops who do not take cards. The EC-Karte (debit card) is accepted in restaurants and lounges in Berlin.
  • You hit the nail on the head! I too experience the same things. I'm an American currently living in Munich with my husband and three children.

As a man who grew up in Southern Berlin I have to say that you are 100% on point with your comments. Like we say in Germany "Wenn Sie den Kuchen essen mΓΆchten, bringen Sie einen LΓΆffel mit"

In the States, I haven't been told a Doctor isn't accepting new patients. However, I have been told since I'm a new patient, I have a 3 - 4 sometimes 6-month wait before seeing a Doctor.
  • @alexo3975
West Germany is much friendlier and easier place to live than East Germany ;)
  • Hey Zoie. As always you look so so beautiful. Love the look. I have not been able to find a new doctor where I live now and it's a pain. Yes I have been here and I have personally faced this where I had to deal with it on my own. I was shouted at and no one intervenes. You are definitely on your own. It's really sad. I am sorry you had to deal with that because especially now that I am more alone in the new city I live in, I know that I can't expect help if I need it from bystanders. Overall I like Germany but you are right there are good and bad wherever you are at. I am really happy you mentioned this because now I don't feel alone. Love you and take care❀❀❀❀
  • You can also call your Krankenkasse and ask for a doctor if you don't already have one. I hope that helps. It sadly changed over the years. When I was young, you could find doctors easier. About the cash thing in Berlin: Rents are very high here (I come also from Berlin) and if someone pays by card, the restaurant gets 1 or 2 percent less money than if it's payed by cash... and they already earn not much so I can understand it. Sorry to hear your negative experience with non helping people.
  • Hey Zoie, if you have health insurance there’s numbers for booking appointments for English speaking customers. You don’t actually have to find a gynaecologist, Dr etc it’s a service that insurer’s like TK provide. I hope this helps ☺️

As a jamaican woman i used to live ok darmstadt germany, i left for the us in may. I lived there for three years. Its was ni e and everything but the people are cold and unfriendly. I never made not one german friend, every one was expats like my self or other immigrants. I didnt like how it was difficult to get simple little things like a dog and the fact that auslandebehorde darmstadt is impossible to get i had to put their number on redial to get them. Racism is subtle but pissed me offffff!!!!!!!!!!! I dont wanna dwell but overall it was an ok play. Yep customer service is non-existence, like you customer service am like what??? There is none. Back to racism i remember my bf had a shoulder problem( btw healthcare is top tier) covid was over we went to this town i think in heppinheim. There was this girl at the door who stop us and had us waiting outside in the cold while every one just passed and went in. I had behave like a wild banshee to get some recognition, and she had thr nerve to use covid as an excuse and when i said, you let everyone else pass, all of a sudden her english became non-existence.
