In the inaugural Expedition Log, I visit a dead mall in Woodlawn, Maryland which is right outside of Baltimore. This is a tour of the nearly abandoned Seoul Plaza, which is Anchor to the Security Square Mall.

This series will explore dead malls, abandoned places, beautiful places, and everything in-between.

Holy smokes, we've come a long way since the pilot episode of the Expedition Log Series! When I did the commentary track for this episode, I was actually pretty sick, which is why I sound awful. I plan to revisit this place at some point for a reshoot, so please stay tuned! Check out the rest of the Expedition Log Series, as Episode 20 for the abandoned Landmark Mall in Alexandria, VA was just published. Thanks for all the amazing support, and stay tuned for much much more!
  • Entering Security Square South from Security Square is like crossing the boundary between a not-too-shabby neighborhood and a nuclear exclusion zone. What a stark contrast.

Starting from the bottom and rewatching to give this series the attention it deserves! Amazing to see you finding your voice and filming style. Exlog 1 ✅

Darn you guys and your vaporwave...I'm now on bandcamp buying albums! lol
  • It's so crazy I watch these and it's so sad to see these places fall apart/turn into dead zones. Once brought so much joy and excitement. I actually went to my mall today to walk around and I was looking at things I never noticed before. Even my mall even though so small over half the stores are closed. Great video!!
  • Started watching this series because the Cortana Mall was my "Disneyland" when I was teen in South LA in the mid 80's. After that, watched a few more of your videos of other malls I had been to over the years that are now dying. It's awesome to see how the quality of your videos has gotten better as you've progressed. You've always given a good history of each mall, and done a great job of interweaving the history with the tour, but your telling of those stories has also improved. Gonna watch this whole series in order. Thank you.

I grew up in woodlawn, from 72 to 03, but live in New Orleans now and I lived through Katrina, but this episode broke my heart. I am glad you showed me you can never go back to your childhood.

Home mall! Home area of Woodlawn, MD. I was raised here my entire life, and remember lots about this mall. The clientele nor vendors this mall brings isn't exactly what it used to be. They used to have a Friendly's Restaurant in here near the food court. The center atrium was a water fountain that was turned into a stage, then completely removed. They had a Woolworth's where Burlington is now (a sit-in Burger King was in that same wing in the 90s), old fashioned arcade, Suncoast, and the trade school you saw was a Montgomery Wards. HECHT'S was where the Macy's is now. Seoul Plaza was a botched project that had the potential to be great, but never reached 100% occupancy. The lettering you were wondering about on the entrance was a welcome sign and also the market name. That entire development goes un-monitored, and even being a local, I never walked upstairs during its vacated state. From my understanding, the local church "Set The Captives Free" has purchased Seoul Plaza with plans of rehabbing it for a community focused church, business, outreach, etc. Which is a great move to revitalize the space. Bennigan's and IHOP have been vacated for ever a decade. IHOP may be able to undergo rehab, but Bennigan's on the other hand, may as well be condemned. Why? Because the majority of the interior was wood. Due to the abandonment and humidity of MD summers, I am almost certain that the interior has decayed so much, it is in an unrecoverable state. Absolute shame, since it was an amazing inside, and had great food there! It is a shame that this is prime real estate, and it is just rotting. Security Blvd serves many government departments (Department Of Health And Human Services AND SSA Headquarters) on that corridor (hence the name of the street and mall), so to have great eateries would thrive during lunch time. This area is...fairly rough around the edges, but me being a true local, it is home. Would I move back to Woodlawn? No. But it is home nonetheless. Hope this gave some perspective to you! Happy to elaborate on anything about this mall since I would consider myself a neighborhood historian. lol

As Mitch Hedberh said" a escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You should never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the inconvenience "
  • I'm old enough to remember when the Woolworth's still had a lunch counter. I saw THE BLACK HOLE and THE MUPPET MOVIE in this mall when the cinema was inside. There used to be a piano store in this mall back in the day.

I just visited here today. The only remaining tenants are a barber shop, a braiding shop, a Mexican food shop, and a "spa". The upper roof is leaking water, and the floors are buckling upper and lower in some places. I did take a few photographs, but nothing special.
  • Hey Sal. Excellent job with your videoing and narration. You have sent me down the YouTube binge watching rabbit hole!! Thanks

That is really weird how half is pretty busy and then the other half is very dead

At about 2:00 you can glimpse The Great Cookie. Years ago they had the greatest fudge slices, replete with walnuts. It was the greatest fudge treat, dare I say, in the free world. I would sometimes buy all that they had, they were THAT good. Cash only, about one dollar each. About the size of a slice of bread, only much thicker. I really miss that fudge. True B-more tale.
  • Hi. I enjoyed watching a few of your mall series videos so much the other night, I decided to binge watch the others on your channel. After viewing this video above, I'm off to a good start 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing. I will comment as I go along.
  • Despite the intense de ja vu I had during this especially that bench under the big neon sign then you go outside and wander around the IHOP and that super duper slowed down creepy music … Dude, I'm becoming a huge fan. That is all.
  • @kwyetkapsule189
I think he was throwing you the peace sign. Trying to see the better side of humanity and giving the dude the benefit of the doubt :)
