In 2010, a 4Chan user posted a single Minecraft screenshot. Soon after, a streamer named Copeland sighted this creature, now known as Herobrine, live on the Brocraft stream. In 2020, the Minecraft@Home team embarked on a massive search for the birthplace of this decade-old urban legend. In this video, I'll be telling the long and fascinating story of Herobrine, Minecraft's most infamous ghost story.

  • I love how back then we were absolutely scared of him but now we treat him like an old friend
  • I think at this point, Herobrine should be added every Halloween as an event.

This story will forever give me goosebumps whenever I hear about it. Foggy, low quality Minecraft, 4chan, a year where weird things went down, old live-streaming services.. it’s all just so creepy to me. Yeah ik hero brine wasn’t real but 8 year old me wasn’t scared of hero brine coming to kill me, but just the fact that some other Steve like creature was with me, and I wasn’t alone.

If you truly want to experience Herobrine like you’ve always thought it’d feel like, search up the mod “From the fog”. It adds herobrine… but he never attacks you like other herobrine mobs. He will vanish as soon as the game detects that you see him

although herobrine is not actually in the game, he will always be a part of minecraft

"Herobrine" is how one man fooled an entire generation.
  • @Sheashay101
Herobrine is also prominently featured in a lot of Minecraft official novels, so that’s also something that can contribute to his staying power

I've always wondered why the creator of the Herobrine story and the character has never come forward to discuss their creation, give interviews, answer questions, interact with the community, etc.. Honestly seems like they booted up the internet, wrote a Minecraft horror story and then left. I hope one day they resurface, it would be an absolute treat to get an insight into how the character and story were conceived and their reaction to Herobrine's popularity

As a mod Dev, the most supported theory is it was a glitch in the code that led to the old human mob spawning in the fog, with the fog covering the eyes. This is also supported by Notch, as the Removed Herobrine changelog was a reference to the human mob code being removed.

Personally I like to think Herobrine isn’t some malevolent entity that wants to kill/terrify you. I think he’s just an odd presence that made itself a home in the game, and doesn’t actually want to harm the player but wants to make its presence known to them (eg. leaveless trees, pyramids in the ocean and tunnels). However he doesn’t seem to realize that these activities scare the players that bear witness to them, and therefore keeps doing it in order to make contact, unaware that he’s scaring the players away.

One thing I believe had a big impact on making people believe in Herobrine was the Yogscast's "Shadow of Israphel" series. At the time the game was still in it's relatively early years, so a hostile player like mob was still fairly believable, coupled with just how the production was done for the series where the Yogscast scripted some of what they were going to do, but also had other people build things they didn't know about so they would have genuine surprise towards what was happening.

the nostalgia is real, dude. these old mods, ideas, youtubers. Literally takes me back to being 9 and 10 again.
  • @ASHE_ATTACC
I find it wholesome that Mojang decided to play along with this little inside joke. They could have just said "Nah, Herobrine's not real, shut up." Like any other company would with a hoax. But no, they played along, and they kept it alive. I find that wholesome
  • I love how notch went from ''We might add it in the future'' to ''going along with the joke'' to ''stop bothering me with this its a myth''
  • @pensamiento3867
i absolutely love how herobrine's account owner has a herobrine cat hoodie skin nowadays, i wonder what they're up to in multiplayer servers
  • @hootci4
Steve: exists players: kalm Steve but with white eyes: exists players: panik
  • @SuperWiiBros08
I really wonder if the creator of that original herobrine post will ever reveal himself and explain how they did and came up with everything
  • @CohenDyck
imagine waking up every morning knowing that you created herobrine
  • @MST3Killa
I always thought they could have played with Herobrine a bit in a fun, nonintrusive way. Portals would have been a good one. The idea that when you enter the portal, Steve leaves the overworld, but in his place is Herobrine. They can't exist in the same dimension together, so when one enters a portal, they switch. Perhaps in the nether portal loading you catch shadows/glimpses of Herobrine once in a great while just to tease the switch is occuring. When you return to either dimension, you may find somethings are slightly different. Nothing destroyed or anything, just little changes once in a while, like someone else had been there. :)
