Ikaria, an isolated island in the Greek archipelago, is on average 10 years older than the rest of Europe. Niklas meets wine producers and beekeepers, and takes a closer look at what the cause may be.

Niklas travels the world exploring Blue Zones, areas where people often turn over 100 years old. What is it that makes a long life in these places not only possible but also likely?

In this food and lifestyle documentary series, internationally renowned chef Niklas Ekstedt explores the secret of living past the age of 100. He’s travelling to six of the world’s ‘blue zones’ – regions such as Sardinia, Costa Rica, and Okinawa in Japan, where unusually high numbers of people reach an advanced age – in a quest to find the recipe for a long and healthy life. Along the way, he befriends locals and gets to know them, joining in with their daily routines and discussing their approaches to life, food, and ageing. He also reveals different ways of living. For example, in Ikaria, Greece, he discovers a town which keeps the stress levels down by not keeping track of time. And, as you would expect from a leading chef, he also can’t resist sampling some of the local specialties in every place he visits.

Now I’m dreaming to live in that kind of island.,wonderful place!
  • My greek grandfather died 102 years and my grandmother died 98 years! They lived in Athens and until they died every day they went for a walk! Never ate food that they did not knew what were the ingredients! Never bought a car so they have to walk!Always thinking positive , eat healthy!
  • So many in denial about our sickening modern environment. Air, water and food all contaminated by corporate greed.

I believe the key to longevity in the blue zones could be their diet but more importantly, their relatively lower stress lifestyle due to their unique perspective of life

Absolutely love Greece, Στην υγειά σας, πολλά χρόνια my greek friends
  • Greece always has a stronger relationship with their herbs and vegetables. On every occasion when I visited Greece, a Greek gave me a gift of their herbs or helped me with a herb when I once had a bad stomach (it helped miraculously). Nowhere else I experienced this.
  • I wish every corner of the world would have the same loving community a serene quiet place to live
  • I have long been a fan of the meditteranean diet (Spanish, Italian, Greek) and to see the island of Ikaria it's so wonderfully slow placed, calm and peaceful - it's not just food but the whole atmosphere and lifestyle; what is life but full of care, we have no time to stand and stare but in actuality this is exactly what we should be doing, not being so dtiven by time and nowadays the internet.
  • Just had a gorgeous 3 week holiday in Greece!! If I could speak the language I would have stayed! The people in Greece just don’t stress and is happy and friendly and very helpful! The food is to die for! The wine is so good we never had a hangover! I myself have not worn a watch for 26 years, It s life changing! Once upon a time we also use to live like this in South Africa but things has changed! Stay heathy and drink wine!🥰🍷( Ps they also drink lots of water)

They are located on a beautiful island living a natural life in sync with the environment and the community. You can see the body, mind and spirit are all healthy from this way of life. The work seems to be stress free and organic, very beautiful. It's nothing like working in the American hellscape.
  • I think the secret is a stress free life, a vegetarian based diet, a bit of organic wine, not too much, exercise, fresh air, and that's it.

Mrs. Alexandra has flowers tucked behind her ears. How nice. 🥰
  • Hallo!!!! I am Greek and I also live in Greece although I haven't visited Ikaria. In terms of herbs and virgin olive oil it is true that we eat a lot, as well as vegetables. We use olive oil everyday for cooking and basically on our salad. Olive oil is a remedy for many physical disorders .In every city there is a marketplace at least once a week where someone can buy fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs which most of them are cultivated by farmers. Of course, we can find them in supermarkets but in marketplace they are more fresh and less expensive. Generally, the Greek cuisine contains lots of herbs such as dill, parsley, oregano, mint, basil and green salad like radish , kale, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, tomatoes and cucumbers, green and yellow peppers, paprika and fresh green onions and onions.
  • I love, the live in a Greek village. The people, are humble, and the life healthy .

This is so beautiful. So genuine. So real. It makes me quite emotional to watch. This is what so many of us are missing, and what so many of us pine for without even knowing we do.
