Learn how to render the HIGHEST quality 3D 360° VR video with 6 channels of spatial audio (First Order Ambisonics with Head-Locked Stereo) correctly and publish on YouTube VR. We will cover Adobe Premiere 2020 export workflow and also with FFMPEG, REAPER DAW, and Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation. We will build a streamlined workflow to help you export for BOTH the Oculus TV / Oculus Quest release and YouTube VR release so you can encode only once instead of multiple times.
This is the MISSING GUIDE for creating the best looking and SOUNDING 360VR video for 2020. Let’s dive right in:

📚How to use FFMPEG
Download FFMPEG: ffmpeg.org/
After download, just unzip the folder. Put the video and audio files directly into the bin folder within the FFMPEG folder. Then use the command prompt (CMD.exe) for windows or Terminal on Mac to go into the FFMPEG folder. You can usually just type “cd your-folder-path” and get into the FFMPEG folder. Then just copy and paste below command to run the operation. Comment below if you get lost.
📚HOW TO EXTRACT 3D AUDIO from GoPro MAX:
FFMPEG command line for extra 4-channel ambisonics audio from .360 file:
ffmpeg -i YourGoProMAXfile.360 -vn -acodec pcm_s16le outputAmbiXaudio.wav
📚HOW TO ENCODE 360VR with FFMPEG:
ffmpeg -y -i "input.mov" -c:v libx265 -preset fast -crf 21 -vf "scale=4096x4096:out_range=full" -pix_fmt yuvj420p -aspect 1:1 -movflags faststart "output.mp4"
📚HOW TO MUX 360VR Video and audio together with FFMPEG:
ffmpeg -i yourvideo.mp4 -i "your6chaudio.wav" -map 0:v -map 1:a -c:v copy -c:a copy youroutput.mov

Amazing! Thank you Hugh :-) I had no idea that youtube had opened up for 4ch ambisonics with headlocked stereo. This is great progress for sound design on 360 videos. Brilliant guide, nice and easy to follow. Keep making these technical guides even though they don't get much traction with the mainstream audience, they are pure gold!!
  • @clintonherring
Yay so valuable! I look forward to all of your instruction videos and spend weeks going through them again and again to apply everything you teach
  • @SuzanneL
This is such an amazing tutorial, as always! I'm going to check out your video in the Quest to hear those audio effects in action!
  • @mpalazzo
Hey, your are awesome!! Thanks a lot. I'm a production designer from Brazil and now I'm in PHD studies, my work is a 360o narrative video, and your channel is a great fountain of knowledge!
  • I appreciate you brother! Thank you for shaping the future of our humanity! Stay blessed & stay safe! I will get to work!
  • Amazing Tutorial! Thank you! Besides filling gaps in technical knowledge, this also gave me energy!

You make the BEST tutorials. I wish everyone was as fast, clean, and clear as your content. Hugh Rules!
  • Greetings from Peru, a query I want to remix a production made in Protools, this audio has to be exported from ProTools in WAV Stereo or has to be exported in another way to be binaural, and this audio I want to adhere to a normal Youtube video, you have to encode in a special way the audio and video for binaural? or add any metadata? Thank you for your reply.
  • If you were to marry the 6 channel audio with the video instead of premiere instead of ffMPEG what sequence and track settings would you use?
  • Thanks for the awesome tutorial! The only problem is I can't install Facebook Spatial Audio Workstation. Are there equivalent alternatives?
  • @EdLantz777
Amazing tutorial! Thank you. Hey, can mobile phone in Google Cardboard do Ambisonic with headphones or earbuds in YouTube VR? Any limitations?
  • @jorgenhall854
If I don't want headlocked stereo, can I still check the bottom option in the Spatial Media Metadata Injector, or do I have to insert two silent tracks in the soundfile to get 6 channels?

Hi Hugh, thanks for all your videos and help- I've been learning a lot. Question: I've been trying to use ffmpeg to mux video and audio together, and I keep getting the message "not writing 'chan' tag due to lack of channel information" and it's not rendering and output video. Any pointer on what to look for to fix this would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
  • Hugh! You are amazing. Your tutorials are equivalent to a degree course at any university. Brother, I have one question. Shall I use the same video application for making my project for Oculus GO/ PICO G2 4K? Will the settings remain the same?
  • Hello Hugh, I found your tutorial to be very comprehensive and insightful, as always. I'm currently attempting to compress a 277gb 360 stereoscopic render created from Unity 3D for YouTube and Vimeo. I use stereo audio. Would you recommend using the same pipeline for this type of file? I'm thinking of following your guidelines concerning the 5k x 5k export in h.265.
