STORYLINE:
In honor of Earth Day, groups devoted to preserving their culture performed an offering to Mother Earth in Mexico City on Sunday.
Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, and this year’s global campaign focuses on ending the use of plastics.
Sunday's ceremony started with a dance to Tlaloc, the God of rain.
Asunción Cayetano López, a participant of the offering, said it was important to apologize to Mother Earth for how human beings have neglected and contaminated the earth.
"Mainly some of us come to thank and apologize for what we all, humanity, is doing," she said.
Luis Javier Aguilar, a communications engineer who has participated in the offering since 1996, said it's about "thanking (earth) for everything it gives us and above all, asking it to continue giving us and keeping us."
