In this video i meet up with ‪@DirtLifestyle‬ and ‪@JustinTBraun‬ Way up in the mountains for a camping trip. I cant wait to show you guys this new project. I purchased a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero for $4000 and will be turning it into a budget family off road, overlanding vehicle. The potential of this chassis is incredible with its offroad Dakar Rally racing roots, i think this is the best platform for a budget build. Let me know what you guys think!!

I'm terrified these are going to go from "unknown" to "underrated" to "overvalued" within the next few years, since that's the trajectory of every other underrated car.

I don’t care what anybody says I loved this generation Montero, and from everything I’ve read online they’re super reliable on past 200,000 miles. If I made more money I’d get this as a secondary vehicle to use when the weather is inclement or on trips especially. Your video really shows the off-road capabilities this thing has also!
  • As a fellow WA resident who owns a Gen 3 Montero and from Australia I approve this very very much
  • Have a 3.2lt diesel Generation 4 in Australia the same just updated, goes like a rally car. Robust and reliable for sure, mine is 2012. Since I bought it the last 3 services (once a year) was $350 each. Hey, and this is Australia ..... the roads are crap...even in the city.

Growing up in the Middle East you would see so many these hitting the dunes at an incline. Great vehicle especially properly outfitted!

I have owned 7 Pajeros. Now I have mk3 with the 3.2 liter Diesel engine. I have driven millions of kilometers on rough roads all over East Africa. Extremely good cars especially the mk2 version.

Nice video! Great buy, mate, you won't regret it. I've bought the exact same car, even same colour, 3 years ago with only 80k miles. Beautiful condition. Me and my wife use it to overland here in New Zealand. Upgraded the suspension with 2inch OME, and changed to Maxxis AT tyres. Added a roof platform and rooftop tent, house battery in the back, and fridge (removed 3rd row seats). It takes us everywhere, with such a nice ride. Good luck with your build - please share a link if you're recording your progress. Have fun!!
  • My wife is Colombian and loves a good 4x4 and is accustomed to them. We've come across some online for sale with nothing but Grand Parent miles on them. Only thing is getting parts and mechanical repairs at shops that are familiar with working on them

Glad to see u like the Montero. Welcome to the three diamond world. Would love to see u get together with other WA Montero guys to show the different gens and overall capabilities of the platform.

XLS Gen 3s have 4.90 gears ideal for bigger wheels and tires. We own all 3 generations..the Gen 3 is the best for both of road and normal pavement. Check out Adventure Driven design for their USA made full underbody armour and Luso Overland for additional parts. There are a few Gen 3s that have done Rubicon and many that done MOAB also. It's definitely one of the last overbuilt Japanese SUVs.

Cant wait to see the progress! welcome to the Montero world. It is an awesome world class vehicle known as Montero, Pajero and Shogun in Japan.
  • @nonope1774
Sweet ride. The 2nd gen Montero SR comes with a factory air locker, and all gen 2s fit 33x11 MT tires stock. That rear suspension is super nice though, I can't think of anything else that is IRS and has a real low range and room for overlanding. Sorry VW the Touarge is too small, and the low range isn't very much of a gear change.

So gonna follow this build! Just looked up on Craigslist local and found 2 ‘01s $3500!
  • @rasfsa
I have a 2005 and it always turns heads in the trails. No body expects how good it handles.
  • @radchad666
I am about to pick up a gen 3 and been binging all the killer montero content ! your vid is rad. thanks for sharing.
  • That’s how i pretty much looked in the snow with my montero, superfun and immersive behind the wheel. Nothing but smiles
  • I have a 2001 Montero (bought in 2000) and I haven't driven it in years. I'm seriously thinking about trying my hand at converting it.
  • @TJ.Outdoor
i own one of those hidden gem, 2005 3.2 Diesel, Its perfect for overland rig, put drawer in the back, and fold the seats and can sleep in it, if you planing put lift, go with OME, or lovells + billstein shocks

Hey Kelly you probably won't see this because this video is relatively old, but I just love the dynamic between you and Nate. Always have. I've watched both of you from when you had like 5k subs and when Nate was one of the guys on Bleepin. You both just seem like genuine dudes who are just as genuine as when they started youtube. It hasn't changed and its great to see. The conversation between you two in front of the Montero just gave me the same feelings of when I'm taking a break from wheeling with my friends and we are just hanging out together. Thanks for the great video, and cheers from Michigan
