History of ElectricBikeReview.com & Court Rye Personal Story

Published 2019-06-07
Hi guys! A local news station in Washington DC asked to interview me and learn about EBR. I said okay, and the final story of how ElectricBikeReview.com came to be was just launched at the link further down. I was also asked some personal questions, like what motivated me and why I like ebikes. I hope this is fun and provides some perspective if you're an aspiring entrepreneur. As always, I'll do my best to answer some questions in the comments :D

Court. Great interview, learned somethings. I have some knee pain also. The two things that improved that and prevented pain while cycling was: 1) pedal extensions (1" spacers that set your feet farther apart in a natural position) . 2) shorter crank arms (for shorter cyclist, 170mm can be too long and force your knees to bend sharper on the return stroke... I'm just 5'7" tall and went from 170mm to 152mm crank arms and that combination of spacers and shorter crank arms made all the difference for me.. In life there are alternatives / assistive devices that correct what is causing or adding to the pain cyclist experience. There is an adaptive bike shop in Portland. Owned by Julie Noel called Different Spokes. Where she helped a cyclist without arms setup adaptive devices to ride/steer a standard bicycle. She carries hand cycles and recumbent deltas and tadpoles, also, combination hand/pedal cycles to make it possible for everyone to participate in cycling. There are adaptive devices for stroke victims like straps that hold the hand and foot on the side that are not responding well. There are adaptive devices for amputees that allow alternative ways of steering or pedaling. Electric assist has been amazing for cyclist with any type of injury/pain or special needs. It puts cyclist back in the game. PEACE by friend. Ride Safely.
  • Heard that Courtney sold his electric bike review website! Any recommendations as to what the best replacement eBike website is to use in 2024?
  • @Joehickey52
Great report, I've been commuting by ebikes for 9 years now, and don't really miss the car.
  • I knew you were Canadian, I knew it! You are sooo nice! (I am from Quebec) Canada poweeeerrrr! 🍁

Hi Court, I’m a fellow BC ‘er (Clayton Heights in Surrey) Just wanted to say I concur with another commenter here, the industry would NOT be the same without you! Spreading the word about e-Bikes is a real benefit to your fellow man, and of course Woman, keep up the good work! Would love to ride The Stanley Park/ Seawall with you one day, even at age 73 I could keep up thanks to my e-bike! lol

Court, this was a really terrific insight into your life, philosophy and kindness. Your diligence helped me purchase my first eBike three years ago and I'll be relying on your site's assistance again as I decide on my next eBike very soon. You and your comrades' reviews can be counted on just as I'm sure you're counted on as a friend. Cheers and be safe out there!

Just wanted to thank you Court. Your videos were a BIG help for me in choosing which e bike I wanted to purchase. I needed a commuter bike that would hold up to a 15 mile commute, a step through because I'm heavier and older and under $3k. I ended up purchasing an Aventon Pace 500 step thru. I'm very happy with it. For my first ebike I think it's a good introductory bike for me. Thanks again for your videos. They are very well thought out and informative.

When I was a kid (I'm 58 now), we had the BEST bike path ever just down the street from my house. It didn't matter how old I was or what bike I had (spyder bike w/ sissy bar to a hand-me-down Raleigh English Racer, and 3 or 4 in between), there was no one who could ride that path faster, with its countless hidden corners, super steep hills, fast straightaways and enormous jump at the very end. Talk about being blessed... there ya go!

Your website is great and has a tremendous amount of information. Unfortunately, there is so much information that it's just easier to keep watching the videos and reading the reviews, and punting on actually buying anything. So you are saving me some serious money, for which I say, thank you!
  • @nija1976
Good to know more bout you. I have two e bikes now. Tern GSD and Riese & Mueller HS Tinker. Was talking bout you at The New Wheel the other day. You’re excitement bout e bikes is infectious.
  • Met Court in Fullerton while buying my Motive Stash. Very cool guy and as evidenced here, in it for all the right reasons. Shout out to Sam at Electric Bicycle Center in Fullerton. Check out their videos for some selfless advice!
  • @chinchorrero
Great video (Cheers from Vancouver BC) thanks to you we are getting 2 2021 Surface 604 EBikes
  • One of the best, if not “The Best”, review channels in here....and I watch a ton of them. Add the website and forum and you definitely rise above the rest. Thanks for all you do, the effort is obvious and very much appreciated.
  • @MrMarkusmulder
Thanks man. You look actually good without the helmet 😇👍
  • @teammxm
Well spoken you covered it all and it seem like you’re more relaxed than when you’re doing a review of a EBike. Thanks Court for all you’ve done for us in the EBike community
  • @AgentAlmost
Out of curiosity, what make and model was that first ebike you ordered online sight unseen?
  • @stevemuskie
Today I went through the EBR website looking for non-review videos and came across this video which I enjoyed very much. Lots of interesting info and opinions.
