Hawk moth/hornworm caterpillar...

Published 2012-12-09
This is the first time we have seen these guys in the patch in the 10 years we have been here.. Some of the different species of this family are quite spectacular so would love to see what they turn into.. They moths are actually a beneficial insect to have around as they aid in the pollination process.. These guys will get a reprieve but if we get an infestation other measures will be taken..

  • 6/16/2021: Ouch! Their such a garden nuesance, but such a neat soft marshmallow textured non stinging catapillar. Be As a kid I always Loved'em & always tried to save'em all found in our gardens. I never knew until adult hood their great secret & beauty as a Hawk moth! As a child though all Catapillar became Butterflies. Their cacoon is so unique+so huge, brown+looks like a big brown leaf (mini torrllia or torpedo). So awesome +not attached to as branch, their on ground+ perfectly camaflouged. Nature's so very amazing & do wonderful! I know Horned Catapillar+Monarchs gouge eat 24/7,then go into cacoon ASAP. Wow, they tore up your taters :( but they grow more leaves hopefully soon! I love barrel idea for your taters! I'm gonna borrow your idea! Horn worms usually fave tomato's+herbs. But until now, I didn't realise sweet potatoes were on their list too. Guess they'll find any food source. Survival oh the fittest. & They do metamorphose in to beautiful huge hawk moths+so amazing! Thank you for letting them all live, & for not killing'em. They're great polenaters@nite! & sadly w/our be our present bee death+devastation situation :(. We do need focus on all the pollenators we can find+ lend a helping hand to save world wide! Sadly Pestasides are the culprits & should most/all should be banned. We can survive w/o'em & gonnack yo the old farmer's ways! We must! Chain reactions if pesticides are a to high price to pay. Hopefully scary movie silence of the lambs movie isn't still a bad influence for our great dedicated gardens success! In todays times+troubles of our world today, we do need more great humans to help spread good example+positive info.+ Great examples & others can follow your lead! Thank you very much! You're an awesome+well knowledged gardener/ farmer. I admire your accent! Happy gardening!

Those hornworms are sneaky. They do a great job of hiding in plain sight. If I can't find the worm, I look for the fresh droppings. The worm will be close by.

Good on you brother! Those are your future pollinators.
  • @RobsAquaponics
:D I think the sweet potato is rather frightened of them now as well..
  • @RobsAquaponics

Here on Long Island, NY. I just found one in the house...maybe from a basil leaf I picked that had holes or a dead tomato leaf I cleaned off...would add a picture if YT let me... I put it out by the garbage pail outside. I wish it would eat vines.

I'm actually planting extra tomatoes this year for the Hornworms, the moths they turn into are amazing creatures. Yes I'm a nature nerd :)
  • @RobsAquaponics
It is amazing how fast they chew through the plant.. Have only seen 2 more since making the clip & both times it was on the sweet potato.. Looks to be their plant of choice here... Cheers, Rob.
  • @RobsAquaponics
:D I was fine with them munching on the sweet potato vine... Saved me having to mow them back :D Cheers, Rob..

I had the exact same thing happening in my garden this past summer in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States! I couldn't figure out what was doing it, and I blamed it on the many grasshoppers we had this year. But, come autumn after clearing the beds I found lots of rabbit droppings all around the beds. I thought it was pretty amazing that I didn't see them sooner! I hope you find your culprit! I love your videos. You have a fine setup there!
