Even if it wasn't settling, I absolutely hate the way those stairs interface with that landing.
-
thats why you NEVER waive home inspections and when you find a good inspector, You keep in touch for years to come. Rarely should you use an inspector that your own realtor recommends. Due diligence is key. I got saved from two separate money pits by my inspector and walked away. You may lose the inspection fee but it is nothing compared to what you could end up spending otherwise
-
Who in there right mind would build stairs like that?!
-
I've got a theory on the stairs: There were walls under the stairs that supported everything, and someone decided to "open up" the space under the stairs.
-
Can we all appreciate the trick shot of getting the ball to go under the ladder on such an uneven floor?
-
Stairs in the middle of the room🤣
-
You have to ask yourself, "what is holding up the intermediate landing?". It is highly unlikely the stairs were properly detailed and connected in the first place. To design the stairs structurally to that shape is not easy. You would have to use steel and some atypical engineering to justify them. Just by changing the shape a little bit, the design would become much more practical. Without the foundation issue, there is still an issue with the stair.

My house was built in 1880, so I expect such issues. Those problems in new construction are absolutely unacceptable, and point to a developer who rushed the process to prep the build site.
-
Possibly even more concerning than the structural issues alone: This home looks relatively recently done-up, so someone seems to have given the place a superficial makeover not all that long ago, which accidentally or deliberately would have hid a lot of these "crimes" from casual observers. Unless you know what to look for, a regular and not particularly sophisticated consumer might have thought this looks decent.
-
Thought he was pointing out the staircases ambitious spanning and cantilever from wall. Large Marge better not dwell on landing come Thanksgiving 😮
-
I'm certainly not a professional in the building trades but I immediately saw the problem with the stair landing. Scary
-
I thought the biggest structural issue is the stair. Whoever designed it has an art major.
-
Nice job spotting the clues and putting the pieces together. I’d agree those stairs are on borrowed time.
-
I'm not sure what's keeping those stairs up, it almost looks like an optical illusion.
-
Wow. Goes to show you that a space can have nice finishes installed but if the structures and foundations are not done right its all waste

my wife before she was my wife bought a house in 1994 that looks just like this one with the 2 story windows - hers was in Valley Ranch in north Irving Texas . It had the same sloping floor issues only they were that way from new . If you spilled something on the kitchen counters it would never pool it would start running towards the edge and on to the floor . it was a monument to cut corners and shoddy workmanship through out.

A house that my late husband and I were looking to buy was sinking. An inspector didn’t catch it, but my husband did. He said that the floor just didn’t feel right under his feet. So my husband came back with a level and found that the fireplace was so heavy that it was pulling the house down. Why the inspector didn’t find it, I don’t know. My late husband owned an auto body shop for decades and maybe that is why he caught the issue the inspector didn’t.
-
Not to mention that those stairs couldn't be located in the worst place possible. Who would stairs in the center of the room.
-
Thank you for this video. There are many incompetent home inspectors out there. Potential buyers should be keenly aware of this. As contractor myself, I’ve seen these issues many times over the years. Never let your emotions to purchase over rule your need to have the home thoroughly inspected, and always be prepared to walk away. You will be thankful in the end.

As a new inspector coming into the industry, I appreciate your video to allow me to expend my knowledge just setting at home.
