Invoicing is one of the most important parts of freelancing. Without it…you can’t get paid!

Invoicing can easily fall through the cracks if you don’t have a strong system in place.

Here are 7 critical steps to creating your invoice template:

#1. Add Invoice Numbers
Having a numbering system keeps you from accidentally sending duplicate invoices. It also makes it easy for the client to track down an invoice if it gets lost in their emails.

#2. Set the Due Date
This directly impacts how soon you’ll get paid. While there isn’t a best practice for how long you should give a client to pay you, any longer than 14 days can start to put stress on your finances.

#3. Include Your Personal Information
This lets the client know your details so they can pay you.

#4. Provide the Client’s Information
When sending through the mail, this ensures the invoice will reach your client. However, if sending the invoice by email, this step shows the client that this invoice is intended for them.

#5. List the Line Items
Line items show the client everything you worked on for the project, along with how much each item cost.

#6. State the Payment Methods
It’s best to set your business up to accept multiple payment methods. This makes it easy for the client to pay you, which means you’ll get paid faster.

#7. Send the Email
Keep your subject lines short and direct, so the client is clear on what this email is about. Thank your client for the opportunity, and use this email as a chance to continue developing a long-term relationship with your client.
