How Do Raccoons Get On Roofs?

Published 2021-06-09
Bill Dowd, CEO of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control explains how raccoons get on your roof and how they use it as a point of entry into your home. If you see a raccoon on your roof there is a chance they have already created an entry point to your home, or they are looking for one. Skedaddle is able to take preventative measures to animal-proof your structure, by sealing all entry points and preventing their ability to enter in the first place. If you suspect the raccoons on your roof are entering your home, visit our website linked below to schedule a property assessment and begin your raccoon removal process.

I slathered my downspout with super thick petroleum jelly. Rain doesn't wash it away and it's slippery af.

My neighbor just told me raccoons chewed through the TOP of their roof... Their insurance wouldn't pay to fix it. Went through the wood and all... Left hairs all over the shingles in the crime area. Oh my gosh... Never knew it was a thing!
  • Thank you for this video. We cut down ALL the trees around our house, and the next thing you know, the raccoons STILL got into our attic. We were wondering if they could climb downspouts and brick walls. This video confirmed the brick wall portion. We purchased stainless steel metal spike strips and bolted them to the downspouts, but I don't know how I'm going to keep them from climbing the brick.
  • We have put an electric wire about an inch under our wood fence all the way around the back yard. We have fruit trees to protect. Also, they poop and their feces can be deadly with the worms inside it that can only be killed with boiling water and fire. But now I think I heard them going over the roof to access the backyard via the downspouts. So this afternoon I'm going to try to figure out how to sew these spiky building things from Home Depot to wrap around the downspouts.

This is one of the most frustrating situations I'm dealing with. You make such excellent points. Wish you were in my area. The companies around here are not humane and I won't deal with them.
  • Why did I jump when he opened the garbage can and there was a raccoon in there staring up at him? I knew what they were going to show and yet I still was afraid. Ugh! I can't stand those things! If they were only in another country and I didn't have to deal with them, I'd think they were the cutest things ever but since that's not the case.........🤨
  • Yeah… The last winter storm caused trees to fall. The maintenance crew, that we pay ,never bothered to clean up the trees .Even after I complained that there was a big branch hanging down directly over my roof And now I have a raccoon in the wall behind the furnace. And it has babies in there. I am pissed off . They were supposed to clean up the trees .They had a list with everybody’s name on it. I’m still waiting two months later.

Maybe a metal roof is the only thing that MAY work.
