The art of driving steam locomotives, this is the one thing most people would love to do alongside firing steam engines. Alongside teaching new volunteers and members of the public how to drive steam engines. Clive even shows off his driving skills on a steam engine. He explains that people who drive steam engines need to know exactly where they are and that they know exactly what can be expected to happen.

  • @Isochest
As Clive describes his discipline as a train driver I feel it is grossly underestimated by many people.
  • A man so unassuming and passionate about his duties, A pleasure to watch.
  • @gilesengineer
Delightful chap was Clive - as is Mick Blackburn, who was seen firing for him.

Thanks, Clive, reminds me of my firing days at 70A and later, Basingstoke in the 1960s. I'm now in West Oz and frequently correspond with one of your other firemen, Robbie Lee, who's here also. A nice trip down memory lane.
  • Always something to learn about firing and driving a steam locomotive. Always!

  • Really great stuff, Great Grandfather was a driver. Massively looking forward to the tsw steam development.
  • I've especially wanted to mention that I personally saw this very same steam-driven railway tender locomotive known as by the number 9017 throughout the opening montage of 1 of the sections in 1 of the movies by TELERAIL in my collection of movies on DVD titled the Best of World Steam that'd been narrated by Peter Fairhead who kindly gave lots of different types of information 'bout each of the steam-driven railway locomotives!

In the mid-'90s I met Clive Groome's shedmaster from Nine Elms. He remembered him very clearly.
  • Marvellous, the voices compliment each order. Thr insight into the responceability of the team on the footplate, is a eye opening. Thank you, Patrick Speaight

Lovely documentary. I had the pleasure of attending a firing and driving course with Clive about thirty years ago; one of my best ever experiences.

I’ve been an American railroader for over 20 years. We always say that you’re as good as your last move. You can have a thousand atta boys but it’s the one oh $hit that is your nemesis.
  • Been a while since we last saw the full video. Good though seeing Clive showing off his skills driving steam engines alongside his daughters.
