  • I heard about the safflower trip to keep blackbirds away. Just bought some and put it out. True, blackbirds don't like it... neither do any of the other birds (chickadees, nuthatches, etc just spit it out). Only birds that seem to tolerate them are house finches. I'm going to try the cage thing next. Thank you

Where to buy the cages that will fit over tube feeders? Can Cardinals still get through?
  • TFS. My local WBU is very helpful in giving information about how to maintain feeders to attract birds you want and or eliminate birds you don’t want by food management.

I'm here to tell you cowbirds learn very quickly how to get in those cage feeders! Redwing blackbirds swing it to knock the seeds out. Grosbeaks will not go in cage feeders I have
  • I found the house suet feeders (upside down feeders) work to prevent starlings and grackles from eating it. Now i can out the super blend suet in them. For all of my others feeders I use safflower seed. I buy peanuts in the shell for my flat feeders for the Bluejays and squirrels. If the peanuts are in the shell the starlings won't want to take time to crack them open.
  • I buy suet cakes but cannot use those baskets as the grey's eat it all. I use a block of wood with holes drilled and filled and I use wire mesh to keep squirrels out. The best is butcher suet that is the favorite among woodpeckers.

  • I live in Indiana where can I find the cage covers that you showed for the large feeder ? I have one of the upside down suet cake feeders is there a cover that will fit over those thank you.
  • I end up taking down my suet feeders in the spring due to starllins as they end up eating it all in a metter of days. Thanks for the great ideas.

What! No comments in over a year? Can I start? OK, I'm new to bird feeding, and this problem cropped up this year. I just bought the upside down suet feeder, and the safflower seeds. Hoping for success. Looks like you have quite the selection there. I'm from Brockton, (originally) and may stop by some day. Thanks for the video. :)

I'm in SW Florida so a lot of the birds you mention aren't around here. I would like to keep the grackles away but not the bluejays, any suggestions? Now if I still lived in Worcester good advice!!
