SmallRig Advanced Compact V-Mount Battery Mounting System Review (4063) (4064)

Published 2023-04-27
My take on the new Smallrig V-Mount Battery Solution.

Something like this is incredibly useful for many cameras that can run on V-Mount or USB Power that need extended run time.

In the case of the R5C its mandatory to unlock some of its higher recording modes, and to get battery life that is acceptable.

While I had already built my own, I had to pick this up as well to see if it was better, and this video covers my thoughts and hopefully helps you decide if you want to get this.

Just to add about the shoulder pad. I understand most people are not self filming POV and will be holding the camera with two hands rather than one like I do for some review videos. In that scenario, filming something/someone else with two hands it does have the right distance, but it still was not helpful. I felt like it limited my ability to side to side pan, and it reduced my ability to produce steady footage while moving as my arms could no longer isolate the camera from my body. The one motion it was good for was a vertical pan, allowing the pad to be my anchor and pivot point. But I would much prefer a tripod for this and its not a normal part of my hand held filming. The only thing I see it good for would be standing still for a long time, and in that case again, I hope you have a tripod or monopod :) As for the rods, the normal rods are threaded, the carbon fiber rods are not threaded (made this mistake already) but the thread ends on this are smaller than the connectors I have, so I am sure you can change the length of the shoulder pad with new rods, just need to hunt down the correct threaded caps to reduce the thread size.

My cage has arca swiss. For fx3/fx30 is great for daily use. Still have a rod setup for bigger rigs

Thank you for making this video, I was looking at the same item and this video help me understand some issues with it. I would like to see your DIY in more detail. I'm not a professional, just my children's footage in the playground etc and that's about it.
  • Thanks. Yeah, Smallrig Arca-Kinda-Compatible. The 4063 doesn’t work with my Peak Design Arca capture plate (which works with my other Arca-Really-Compatible mounts.
  • Hi..I like your side handle..what is that called that na'to connecting to the camera cage?

awesome video. thanks for the helpful informations. how much is the total of your DIY compared to the new smallrig compact v-mount?
  • First video I've seen about this so far! Question that I didn't see an answer to: is the Arca Swiss plate built into the cage compatible, or do you have to use the plate they send you?
  • @HEsounds
where to find about the DIY solution?

@6:59 my kit is the opposite… every Arca-Swiss plate I have goes the other way. I use the Smallrig cages, and they fit right on.

Hello, I would like to see the parts on how you build your own. If you don't mind. I just bought the smallrig piece today.
  • @cyvidal10
have you tried putting it on using only the cage of your camera without using the base plate included. because most of the camera cages have arca swiss plate built into it. specially smallrig ones
