Chicken Rescue: Foster care for fowl

From Chicago to Houston to South Portland, Maine, the urban chicken movement has taken hold. More and more city folks are raising the birds right in their own backyards. Some love the idea of fresh eggs; others appreciate the back-to-the-land aspect of tending to a flock.

There are animal rights advocates, however, who worry about the long-term welfare of the feathered fowl. As the number of city dwellers with chickens has risen, so has the number of birds being abused and abandoned. And local animal control departments are finding stray chickens everywhere from neighborhood alleys to downtown parking ramps.

In the midst of this all, one Minneapolis woman has taken on the chickens' cause. Mary Britton Clouse is the founder of Chicken Run Rescue, a rehabilitation center and foster home for hens and roosters. The long-time animal advocate has found adoptive families for over 600 needy birds.

Reporter Nikki Tundel met up with Mary Britton Clouse at her Minneapolis home.

This couple will definitely have their reward in heaven one day. How wonderful that you still get compassionate people in this world and I am talking about compassion that goes for the most forgotten of farm animals - chickens.

I raise guineas, chickens, and peafowl, my chickens are very sweet, so are the peacocks, you have made me feel a but more hope for humanity, so thank you for taking care of those birds, cause they aren't like us, they don't have hands, so they can't really fend for themselves.

Chickens/hens are great. When I turned veggie (a long time ago), they were the first animal I stopped eating. Within a week, I'd given up the lot. Still grateful. Well done to you. :)

I held a chicken once, and she snuggled up in my lap. I never wanted to let her go.
  • I have a good size farm in Hawaii and wish I could take some of the hens. Mine run free and sleep in a mango tree they pick. I feed them but I would never get rid of them when they stop laying. They live out there life as nature would have it free! Your doing a wonderful thing and Karma will not let you go without!
  • sweet heart woman, thank you so much for every thing you have done for chickens.

Whenever I say their names they come running to me and I give them a great big hug. They both have feathers on there head and they love coming inside and hanging out with me. I love my chickens. ^v^
