Homemade AC Air Cooling unit produces very cold air. 42F air (in an 80F room). items needed: ice chest (hard-sided or styrofoam), pvc pipe, small fan and ice. (small solar panel is optional). great for space cooling. 3 ways to power it: a solar panel, a battery or an automobile (using 12v socket "cig. plug"). this air cooler combines the durability of the "5 Gallon bucket air cooler" with the extra cooling power of the "styrofoam ice chest air cooler". specs: fan: 12VDC 10w 0.8A. solar panel: 15 watt (1 amp). works best in semi-dry or dry climates. (drier air cools down easier/faster than humid). air temperature during testing 80F (4% relative humidity). block of ice lasted 5 hours (larger blocks can last up to 10). to run the cooler 100% off-grid check out my solar ice making/freezer vids.

  • VERY IMPORTANT: Put tray in middle of cooler to suspend ice. If air goes underneath ice instead of skimming top of ice it will make it even colder
  • I did this years ago a friend of mines husband was dying of cancer, the ac went out and my brain went into overload and I was able to keep him cool, while waiting on an ac man to show up. used an old foam cooler and 2 gallon frozen milk jugs with a fan and 2 pieces of pvc pipe and u joints..it worked great...your video is so awesome

I would recommend putting a grate inside the bottom at least 1" from the cooler floor, then add a divider wall in the middle so that when the air flow goes in it hits the bottom and works its way around the divider and goes up past your ice to the exhaust. For a method of cooling add 16-20 oz bottles of water with rock salt in them. Salted water stays frozen longer, 3 bottles on each side of divider and have them spaced apart to allow air to flow through freely. You can rotate 6 bottles in it, 6 bottles in freezer so that you always have cool air to keep house cool. When one set unfreezes switch em out. For clarification, rock salt not table salt, table salt.

Even 7 years later you are still reaching and helping many of us!!! Thank you Sir!!!!!
  • Thanks so much for this video, I am an American missionary living in the Philippines. It's always hot here. This is gonna be a big blessing.

I watched this video and built one of these, it works better on slow fan as the air in the esky circulates more cool air. I used it at the cricket, brought my little solar panel, filled it with ICE and BEER and had a nice cool air blowing on me the whole time whilst the rest of the crowd were choking on the heat. Then open the esky pull out a beer and enjoy a cold one with AC. FUCK YEAH!
  • Several years ago I made one exactly like it for the inside of my truck. Had a 12v fan to be able to plug into cigarette lighter because my truck which was sold in the north not needing an A/C was at the time in Waco Tx blazing hot black Silverado with manual crank windows. It helped and was sure better than nothing.

I live for the YouTube comments as much as I do for the videos
  • My husband made something very similar when he drove across country back in 1982, in an 74 Capri that had no AC. We met on that trip, so I got to feel first hand how well it cooled the car. I was in Phoenix, AZ. and it was about 95* outside and VERY a cool 72* - 74* in the car. He tells me that he went through 15 lbs. of ice each day, as he took the southern route from Los Angeles, CA. to Kingston, N.Y. and it was miserably hot throughout the south. He used salt to sprinkle on the ice when the outside temps got really hot. Something to do will helping the ice give off colder air or something. Oh well, whoda thunk it..!!

This one looks a LOT easier than the other one and probably just as effective. THIS is the design I am going to go for. Just need a cooler, a fan, and a elbow outlet duct. Brilliant!!! (as long as you have ice).

Instead of putting ice in the cooler, I put ice packs. I have raided my Mom's neighbors recycle bins and grabbed a bunch of small empty water containers. Fill them with tap water, freeze, repeat.
  • We just did it!! Its great!! Impatient to try it without the block of ice. So bagged up some cubes and old frozen bread half loaves to clean out freezer so my Dollar Tree dish pans fit to make my blocks of ice. They are the perfect size. Hoping to do 2 and stand them up on their sides so more ice surface is exposed to the fan. THANK YOU!! My birds are going to love it

You could also purchase a sheet of insulation foam, open the lid on the ice chest and fit it to the top. That way you don't have to chop up your ice chest and can convert it back for whichever use.
  • Our air conditioner went out this summer. I let my hubby move my window unit in my studio to the family room, hated having to do leaves me without air in there but we needed it close to the kitchen. So, this is awesome sauce :) we can make one for the bedrooms to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
  • Very ingenious. I was convinced when i saw the temperature read out. Also the sun power was an added bonus. Very impressive.

I made a version of this kind of cooling unit back before YouTube existed, but I'm kinda glad to see I've not been the only one with this idea, plus it's effective and simple enough for anyone to make, and use them anywhere, especially if it's run on DC power or both AC and DC
  • My ex girlfriends heart in there and you would never need another block of ice
  • @smoj690
I am totally going to do this!!! Living in Florida we get a lot of power outages during hurricanes.
  • @billyrubin2001
Lol 😂 That’s probably the most effective, homemade cooling devise I’ve seen on YouTube yet.
