Wonderful job! I used to work as Dale Hawkins' bass player. He was a hell of a nice guy and quite a character.
  • Without a doubt, one of the best guitar tutors on YouTube. Thanks again.
  • @AskZac
You can hear the Lightnin' Hopkins influence here. Great tone! Burton has said he used a small Gretsch amp on this. And this was before he started using the super light strings.

Thank you Adrian, I joined your Patreon. You are keeping the guitar styles alive that I love.

Great job Adrian for a great rockabilly classic. This Dale Hawkns-James Burton version is the most soulful version of Susie-Q.
  • @Dreyno
Susie Q is one of the coolest riffs ever. Going to dig out the delay pedal. Thank you Adrian.

Another fantastic choice. I’ve wanted to learn this for a while now. It’s like this guy can read my mind!

Sure and you know how to pick 'em Adrian. Another great song which I knew at a basic level but you have added nuances I can learn and use. Many thanks!

I started doing some Rick Nelson stuff and really got "hooked" on James Burton's playing...many thanks Adrian for showing his style of playing...I noticed that James Burton played with a finger-pick on his middle finger which I thought was unusual but he has been doing this for eons. Just starting to do "hybrid picking"...not easy as all I have been doing is "flat picking" ! ! ! !

James Burton AKA 'The Telemaster' in 1957. Thanks for pulling apart the original. If nothing else, it highlights the true genius of these rock guitar pioneers. Thanks for your Cliff Gallup, Scotty Moore and James Burton lessons so far.

Great video Adrian! Thank you so much. The sound is just perfect. During the solo there is a percussive sound as you strum from the echo effect that makes it absolutely perfect. I have a great story for you. I purchased a Fender GTX-100 modeling amp with 200 presets, but it also allows you to download tones created by other folks. Just an hour ago I was fooling around with it and came across a tone named 'Cow Punk' and it is literally this exact sound that you have in this video. It is absolutely perfect for Susie Q. I can honestly say I had no desire to learn Susie Q until I saw that you posted a video about it, but now it is my favorite tune to play! Especially with the newly found 'Cow Punk' tone. Excellent video as always, Adrian. I really appreciate all of your videos.

Thanks very much for this outstanding lesson, Adrian!

Ah, James Burton! One of my favorite rock'n'roll guitarists. Well done. You've succeeded in getting to the guts of Susie Q. BTW, James Burton came up with the riff, so the story goes, and Dale Hawkins improvised the words.

Outstanding!!! I cant believe I was actually able to get this, even the drop thumb, thank you
  • @mrsoul4231
The internet absolutely needed this lesson:the Creedence version is ubiquitous and that’s fine, but this is the one-thank you!!!

Mr Burton played all the guitar parts and did all the arrangments for my mom's 2 albums from 68 and 69. "Anna Black • Meet Anna Black" and "Thinking About My Man" — songs to listen to are Little Annie Weed, Gloomy Sunday (by Billie Holiday) and the Beatles Eleanor Rigby — just to name a few highlights.

I've read an interview with James Burton about 10 years ago where he says his first guitar was a Telecaster, so it most likely was recorded on that. I had a friend from the same town in northeast Louisiana where James is from and he learned the lick from James. He taught me the correct way to play it about 20 years ago, just as you played it. Thanks!
  • Awesome lesson as always. I really admire your eclecticism and good taste.
