When we help youth to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, we empower them to be successful in our rapidly changing world. Whether they own a business or work for someone else, young adults need the skills and confidence to identify opportunities, solve problems and sell their ideas. This skillset can be encouraged and developed in elementary schools, with the immediate benefit of increased success in school.

In this talk, Bill Roche shares stories of students that have created their own real business ventures with PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs. He illustrates the power of enabling students to take charge of their learning with freedom to make mistakes, and challenging them to actively develop entrepreneurial skills. Bill also showcases the achievements of specific students and shares how a transformative experience for one student has been a source of inspiration for him over the years. Bill Roche specializes in designing curriculum-based resource packages related to entrepreneurship, financial literacy and social responsibility. Bill worked directly in Langley classrooms for over ten years and now supports teachers throughout the country in creating real-world learning experiences for their students. Over 40,000 students have participated in his PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs program. The program’s impact has been captured in a documentary scheduled for release early in 2018. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The greater the automated income you can build, the freer you will become. Taking the first step is the hardest, but 5 houses later living off automated income since July 6, 2016. You’ve got to start taking steps to achieve your goal.

The school system definitely doesn’t teach entrepreneurship. It teaches kids to be afraid of failure. Schools should encourage kids to try and fail then try again. It’s basically what allowed me to build a business, retire by 40 and spend time helping others.

  • Amazing! I feel like creative students aren’t given any space to express their ideas in Primary and Secondary school. Creativity needs to be nurtured.

Watching this gave me a whole new perspective on myself I was never good at school I didn’t even graduate but I tried everyday and everyday after that people have been pressuring me to go back to school but I’ve tried since kindergarten to senior year and accepted it wasn’t for me I never did well unless someone basically held my hand through it and I’ve been thinking what I should do with my life I had completely forgotten about how amazing I was in group projects or volunteer community service even in public speaking I’ve always been the leader and everyone knew it but I didn’t remember any of that until I watched this Ted talk since I’ve been researching opening my business this made me sure it’s what I’m good at it’s my gift

Absolutely brilliant and beautiful! If schools could all take this approach, learning would be so much more powerful for all students! When all people, children included, discover their individual purpose in this world and are given a platform to express and develop that, learning then has a purpose and is achieved. Wow the empowerment that then becomes! Powerful!
  • Entrepreneurship from young age is the best as they can become dynamic leaders in future. We don't need managers who run their companies using old school, but a new way, a responsible way understanding the scarcity of resources and not creative ideas. It is good for all kids to try their ideas on own to learn skills by hand. It is heartening to change the ways world works.
