The cheapest proper CNC DIY Mill?

love it! i recently made a manual mill in my driveway with some 200x200x16mm steel tube offcuts i got for $60 and then a free treadmill motor. similar spindle and xy table too. but i got some bosch 35mm linear rails for free from uni for my z axis!

I've been thinking about creating linear rails using those steel angles, but I was going to use some thin gibs of UHMW polymer to reduce friction, since UHMW is second to teflon in friction coefficient, and has higher abrasion resistance. But the problem with those type of linear guides, like dovetail, is that it has to be ground to be accurate enough. Search for UHMW slippery tape, maybe you could use that to reduce friction and make it slide more easily. I think concrete is a more cost-effective alternative to epoxy granite to fill the machine bed, if you look at the Loss Coefficient vs Young's Modulus chart, concrete has about the same vibration dampening quality as epoxy granite, while having larger modulus of elasticity and being way cheaper. Langmuir is using concrete in its new machine MR-1 CNC Gantry Mill.

I like the closed frame. Swapping X and Y makes no difference, as long as your controller knows what to do. Have you considered some guarding for your XY table? Everything lasts longer if you can keep tiny hot bits of metal away. For Z, some grooves in the plastic might help distribute grease. Honestly, it all looks useful. Best way to show it off is to mill something. Looking forward to future videos.

How did you manage to pass the video receptors under the cross table? I'm working on a similar project, but I can't get the life die and the sphere circle to pass under the cross table.
