Abandoned Navy Shipyard Mare Island built over 500 submarines and other Naval tools of freedom vessels before being decommissioned in 1996. The shipyard is located at the north end of San Francisco Bay on the Napa River across from the City of Vallejo, California. It has a historic past and contributed greatly to the local economy, navel ship advancement and as well as helping the US protect and serve the interests of democracy and freedom.

Mare Island was formed as a Navy base as soon as California became a State in the 1850's. At the turn of the 19th century the shipyard helped build a landing platform on the USS PA where the first plane landed on a ship in the San Francisco bay paving the way for the modern aircraft carriers today. Mare Island began a submarine program in 1920 and thereafter specialized in subs including modern nuclear subs.

In its heyday, it employed over 40,000 people and everybody in the City of Vallejo area had a family member or knew someone working at Mare Island shipyard.

Vallejo filed for bankruptcy about 10 years after the shipyard closure and the area has been slow to get re-purposed. Fortunately, the Mare Island Brewing Company was one of the first companies to help redevelop and promote the site.

For Halloween the city holds an onsite event called night mare island.

An amazing video in Mare Island. Thank you for such an excellent tour.👍
  • That seems like very expensive real estate to just leave deserted and empty! You would think they would have remade it into something else that would be useful. I’m glad it’s redeveloping. Awesome video, thanks for sharing 👍🤩
