After more than 50 years of service to the U.S. Marine Corps, the CH-46 Sea Knight, affectionately known as the "Phrog," jumped into the history books Aug. 1, with a final flight to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy Center. Now HMM-774, the last operational CH-46 squadron, prepares for its future aboard the MV-22 Osprey.

Sad to see the CH-46 phase out of service. I had many good memories.
  • @Mareritt
Some of my darkest memories came in the back of that Phrog, but man I miss flying in it.

one time a I asked a crew chief about hydraulic fluid leaking all over - he told me worry if it's not leaking cause then we don't have any fluid left

Forgive me for being so old-fashioned butt I just don't understand taking these aircraft out of service they were such wonderful performers.

Thanks for the vid......and God bless our troops.
  • My late father in the 1960's from November of 1962 to April of 1971 worked for Boeing just outside of Philadelphia did the electrical work on the Boeing CH-46 & the Chinook helicopters. I was in the Navy and had flown in a Boeing CH-46 on July 4,1973. I have seen many Navy & Marine Corps Ch-46 helicopters on all 3 Westpac cruises & 2 Mediterrian cruises when I was in the Navy.

I worked on them replace all four engines each one of the engines produces 1800 horse power I've also flew in them they use to put them down into the water for seal team and marine recon recovery Dearing the final operations in Vietnam they had to push alot of aircraft over the side to make room for more Helio landing on the flight deck at here's a hole bunch of h1 hueysh46s and I think some h53s along with small arms of all kinds off the coast of Vietnam and south toward the Philippines

  • @dondidykes9507

I think Cherry Point MCAS just shut their PEDRO squadron down and these were the same type of copters.
  • Is there any future option for jet turbine engines to be installed to replace the props? The Marines do have the Harrier, thrusters...I could see the Osprey with such. Probably more efficient and faster? Just a thought here.
  • im fairly certain i saw them flying last month. 2 of them flying overhead, nearly identical in my memory.

I always referred to those aircraft as "Flying telephone horns" not too difficult to see why
