Six members of the Supreme Court of the United States—all HLS alumni— opened Harvard Law School's bicentennial summit on Oct. 26. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. ’79; Associate Justices Anthony M. Kennedy ’61, Stephen G. Breyer ’64, Elena Kagan ’86 and Neil M. Gorsuch ’91; and Associate Justice (retired) David H. Souter ’66 shared memories, advice and more than a few priceless anecdotes. To commemorate Harvard Law School's 200th anniversary, the law school hosted an extraordinary gathering of global leaders on Oct. 26-27 for HLS in the World, a bicentennial summit designed to address important issues in legal education, the legal profession, law, and society.

Imagine having people with such different views on law being able to be so cordial, we could all learn from this

Gorsuch is so ducking smart. I respect him a lot even when I don’t agree with him

This brought so much joy and happiness. Seeing all these justices - all different ages, minds, and philosophies - sitting there together, laughing, being cordial, it made so happy. It's such a shame the American people, the Presidency, and Congress can't come together like this. Politics never used to be so decisive and it's such a shame. But I hope there'll be more moments like this in the future. Even if it's not a lot, just some here and there, for us to laugh together, to unite together, and just enjoy life.

I admire all Supreme Court Justices for their court judgements whether be it in the USA, UK or India. Judges having different views on law is a healthy thing.

I WAS ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that Gorsuch would pick Byron White as a Judge to have dinner with. He spoke in length about him at conformation hearings. Seemed like he really admired him.

Inspiring and uplifting. Such a pleasure to know a little of the mind and personality that each justice brings to the court. Thank you for an enjoyable hour.
  • Am I the only one who thought it was sweet that Kennedy reminisced about Thurgood Marshall?

In fact there was actually a seat made for Taft in Woolsey Hall in New Haven. It is the first balcony right section E, seat 9.
