At first, when eight-year-old James Ramage started wearing a suit to class at Chelsea Elementary School in the small rural town of Chelsea, Maine, the other kids didn't know what to think. Now the students join in, and once a week put on their finest for what is known as "Dapper Wednesday." Correspondent Steve Hartman reports.

Dressing well is social armor and it's wonderful that children are discovering that.

I love this. I am so sick of seeing adults wearing t-shirt and jeans to opera or symphony. Good for this little trend setter - a real influencer!

In a world of followers this kid is a leader.

This is by far the best news piece I've seen in a long time. Now if only the other adults in the world would follow 'suit'.

What fun ! All of the kids look great ! So happy they are able to use clothing to express their individuality ! And three cheers for the teacher, Dean Paquette(?) for his support --- which means so much to children !

I admire his attitude about life and his influence as a trend setter.
  • More power to this young man! Everyone should dress in a way that makes them feel good, and makes them happy...within reason, of course. "Dapper Wednesday" is a day to look forward to, a day to present a different side of us, and a day to glam it up a bit. For myself, I've worn only skirts or dresses every day for 17 years--even out for walks, mowing the lawn, in the winter, grocery shopping, and at home. It's my style, and it makes me happy. Strangers are constantly questioning me with, "Why are you so dressed up?" or "Did you just come from work?" When in fact, wearing a skirt or dress every single day is only "weird" here in the upper Midwest of America. Dressing up a bit is not "weird" in much of the rest of the world.

    I love this. Acceptance=fun=confidence=love=Acceptance.
  • Dapper Wednesday sure beats Pajama Day for sure! But at the same time, James Ramage taught me something even better. He taught me that a smile and self-confidence are always the best things to wear. That really helps me to feel good.

Let kids be kids. Being a kid is the time where it's acceptable and encouraged to dress like a kid.
