Direct Sowing Poppies

Published 2022-05-18
It is May 17th and I am direct sowing California Poppies.

I thought poppies needed to be sown outdoors earlier than this, but the seed packet says that poppies should be sown outdoors in April and May in my area. I am also concerned that it may be too warm this year in particular as we have had some unusually high temperatures.

I have heard that poppies may germinate better if they have a period of cold stratification and if they are surface sown. I am following the directions on the seed packet this time, but I will remember these tips if I end up having poor germination.

I am seeding the poppies in with my volunteer sunflowers. At the end of last season, I shook out all of my flower heads and this year I have lots of volunteer flowers! I thought these were zinnias until they grew their first true leaves and I was pleasantly surprised to find out they were all sunflowers. I grew Autumn Beauty, Lemon Queen, and Velvet Queen last year and I am excited to see what varieties have volunteered.

  • Poppies are such beautiful flowers, perhaps even my favorite! Can't wait to see yours bloom. It was also very relaxing to watch the ''simple'' task of sowing. Lovely video!
