U.S. Amateur Classic Finishes: 1996 | Tiger Woods Looks for Third-Straight U.S. Amateur Title

Published 2020-08-16
Phenom Tiger Woods, already a five-time USGA champion, was looking for his third-straight U.S. Amateur title in 1996. But once again he would have to battle back from a big deficit, this time against Steve Scott at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) conducts many of golf's most prestigious championships, highlighted by the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women's Open and the world’s premier amateur championships. Based in Liberty Corner, N.J., the USGA governs the game in the U.S., its territories and Mexico.

My hat goes off to Steve Scott. This kid played his ass off and was a really tough opponent. In match play that’s what you have to be. And he even showed his sportsmanship to Tiger reminding him to remark his ball. I watched a video about Scott reflecting on this match and he was the most humble guy you could be

This was a fantastic match. Steve Scott left everything on the course against Tiger. I’ve heard Scott talk about this match in various interviews, and he is an absolute class act.

Scott, you were playing with the GOAT / Greatest OF All TIME.

We should always remember how blessed we have been to witness these, great amateur players. Kenne, Buddy, and Scott. Where are they now? Great memories giving Tiger a run!

I loved the way that Scott’s caddy went from all smiles to total panic mode. It was awesome!!!😉
  • If you watch the 1994, 95 and 96 US Amateur you will see the crowds exponentially growing. It is easy to see why the USPGA were so excited about the Tiger phenom turning pro.

listening to the conversation at 46:00 is kind of chilling: "tiger wants to go pro but that would be a risk. he of course is playing in two pro tournaments later this summer because he has "nothing to do" before school starts. maybe he can get a win and get a tour exemption." He won one of those(i think i could be wrong) and then won the very next major he played in(97 masters) by 12 SHOTS

Thank you for posting this. Please upload all the old US Amateurs. I love the classic golf ⛳️
  • Just a couple years younger than Tiger, watching this event inspired me to pick up the game. Following his unprecedented GOAT career was almost a religion when I was younger.

Great match to watch nothing short of amateur golf two of best

Interesting recording, has Johnny Miller’s and Roger Maltbie’s banter between commecial breaks. Johnny saying things he wouldn’t say on air.
  • Pure power. 44" x-100 steel shaft driver, tour balata ball. 330 yards, carrying it 300....unreal.

Steve Scott was so gracious in defeat to Tiger. You can see in the interview he seems to admire Tiger.

Amateur mini golfer here, this was a great matchup. Caught on quick. Really loved the watch

Early Johnny Miller commentator is awesome. Got cranky towards the end
  • @adamtucker2089
I wonder if Steve is sitting on his recliner right now still wondering why he reminded Tiger to move his marker on the 16th green. Good stuff, Steve.
  • People. . . . Tiger here was hitting 330 yard drives with a King Cobra driver and Titleist Professional 90 ball, which today feels like a one of those vending machine $.25 rubber super balls. 130 mph club head speed. You can hear the incredulity and marvel in Johnny Miller's commentary.

This kid held his own against one of the greatest golfers that has ever lived. Really impressively played, this guy is a class act.
  • @lgood5122
Tiger was a real pro already at that time. Probably better than most pros.
