Grand Canyon's Epic Day Hikes: Rim-to-River-to-Rim

Published 2023-11-25
Near the top of Grand Canyon's bucket list hikes is the iconic Rim-to-River (also known as Rim-to-River-to-Rim).

Traditionally starting from the South Kaibab trailhead, the Rim-to-River route takes you seven miles down to the Colorado River, and more than nine back up Bright Angel Trail to the finish in Grand Canyon Village.

The trip down South Kaibab provides a Grand Canyon experience like no other, with breathtaking views almost every step of the way along the 4780-foot descent. At the bottom, you can continue on to Phantom Ranch (about another half-mile) or put your head down and get to work on the long, difficult climb up Bright Angel, on which you'll gain more than 4400 feet of elevation.

Before you take on this hike, follow along as we take you the entire length of the route, showing you what to expect on the hike of a lifetime deep inside one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

If you have ANY questions whatsoever, please drop them in the comments. We exist only to help you have the best possible experience in the place we love so much.

Thanks for watching.

Well done. I am now too old now, but I would of loved to do that hike. I have done Angels Landing in Zion national park. Not as long as rim to river. Great video.

Thank you for this nice summary. I did this hike three weeks ago. It is fantastic. But it is harder than I expected. I do 6-7 thousand feet per week in my work outs, and it was still really hard.

Great information sir. Thank you. This is my end of year goal. šŸ‘šŸ½šŸ‘šŸ½
  • For completeness, I would have appreciated an acknowledgment of the ā€œRiver Trailā€ intersection with the South Kaibab as an option to bypass Phantom Ranch.

I love the information you provided, I plan to do this hike in mid June 2024. I wonder what month you did this hike? What time of the day you leave phantom ranch? I love the shade along the trail from silver bridge to Indian garden. I want to time my hike so that I can see some shade like you did in here.
    Thank you

What kind of shoes do you wear. I prefer running shoes for all summer hiking.
  • Awesome! Do you have a recommendation for gear list for doing this in a day? And whatā€™s best time of year to hit this. Thanks! šŸ˜Š
