I Should Have Seen This Coming...

Unknown quantities of dirt, rocks, and sand do not make for a great turning experience, and I certainly learned a few things the hard way with this one. For starters, the manufacturer of the casting resin, ‪@superclearepoxy‬ advised me to expect resin chipout when turning at high speeds, so I have grown accustomed to intense, hand-scarring resin shrapnel for the first rough shaping passes. (Hence, this was also my first time using gloves while turning.) In the past, I have had problems with carbide bits loosening, but I had never before had a carbide cutter break. So, my initial assumption was that I had hit a rock or a piece of metal, but nope, it was just super hard epoxy. ‪@EasyWoodTools‬ was great and replaced both the carbide cutter and the screw for free. I eventually resorted to an angle grinder to negotiate the dirt, and I knew there was more dirt and rocks potentially inside the piece. While hollowing the piece, I could tell that a significant portion of the material was dirt/sand/and small rocks, because there were very few clean cuts and lots of vibration. ‪@Lyle‬ , the manufacturer of the hollowing system, had some great advice for me regarding proper hollowing techniques, but we eventually agreed that this material was becoming unworkable and potentially unsafe. However, with the help of Starbond CA glue and TotalBoat epoxy, victory was within reach!

Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed this project. Please comment letting me know what you think, and please let me know what you would like me to make next!

It is beautiful! I’m so thankful to be the lucky owner of this piece. Thank you, David!! ❤
  • Being able to see the initial shrub and say.. "This is kinda shaped like a vase, it'll make a good vase" is incredible creativity
  • @jenniferroselynn
I had the honor of growing up in a household of woodworkers and spent what felt like my entire childhood, sanding EVERYTHING! But I truly wish that my grandfather and uncle were alive today to see this work of art...they would be stunned. The entire process is amazing and I'm glad I didn't have to sand it!!!
  • @1harperaj
Splendid piece of art and craftsmanship, however, not recommended for the average wood-turner who values “two arms and a leg”
  • I give you a lot of credit, David, for not only turning what looked like a piece of junk into an incredible work of art, but also for sticking with this project through its myriad of frustrations and challenges. Job well done!
  • @pcu526
Wow David this is all so impressive!! Your vision in seeing the vase… all the process of creating it.. and the amazing video/documentation of it all ! Well done ❤

this randomly popped up on my feed and i had no idea what i was getting into when i clicked.. but WOW! that was so cool hahahha, thanks David! keep spreading your light and gifts my friend ✌💙
  • the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. youtube.com/post/UgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9… as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
  • @DragonBee259
I love that you specifically used the gold to try and seal the cracks. It gives the vase a kintsugi sort of look. Love your work bruv. 👍🏽
  • @hyliadreamer
I'm sorry that it gave you so much trouble, but I think we can all agree that the result was well worth it all. It's a beautiful piece!
  • @markshepherd7367
Absolutely astounding, I will never get over the way something so beautiful can be made as long as you are experienced enough to make it. You are amazing.
  • @jskjsk3986
An expert is not someone without flaws, but someone who overcomes them. Nice job.
  • @matjohnston5382
I was totally riveted to this entire video. I've never watched anything like this before. The imagination, the vision in the minds eye to see this in a mangled old shrub root, and the talent to create it is truly amazing.
  • @StarBigBang
First video of yours I’ve seen, and absolutely astounding. Beautiful work
  • Fabulously created…wonderful to see it unfold!
  • I was a manual machinist for a few years and I'm absolutely blown away by your skill and artistic ability.
  • @donaldsink8115
I'm so glad videos like this are here for people like me to see. Sometimes we walk into a shop and see an item like this with a what we see as a extremly high price. Watching how much skill it takes to bring something like this to the public is impotant. By knowing part of the process and the skills needed, price no longer is as an important part as is how much you admire the talent and the beauty of the piece of Art.
  • Wow! There is a lot going on with this work of art and beauty. I could just watch it spin and spin. Thank you for your creativity skill.
  • @hannah11t7
Looks like all different shapes of galaxies floating around, I love it 😍 I feel like I would never get tired of looking at all the details
