Here's weekly dose of your catastrophic engine forensics! Every week you can find a new teardown of some abused, misused and/or poorly designed engine. Here are some of my favorites:
Neglected VR30DDTT    • 60K Miles on 1 Oil Change!?! Infiniti...
Poor Honda S2000 F20C    • Honda S2000 F20C1 Catastrophic Engine...
The Nissan VQ40DE I saved from the scrap pile    • Found a Nissan VQ40DE In Scrap Pile, ...
Honda J35 that deleted itself    • Obliterated Honda Accord J35 V6 Teard...

Today we tear down a highly request Nissan VQ35 from a 2017 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid. The VQ came around in the early 2000's and has been a staple in the Nissan and Infiniti lineup since. This version is a direct injected VQ35HR which in the Q50 is found in the Hybrid models from 2014-2017.
This particular core is blown up BAD, but how did it get so bad? How did the driver not shut it off at the early warning signs? Well the answer may surprise you. We tear this engine all the way down to figure out exactly what went wrong and how it got so bad.

Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart. Part of our model includes buying blown up engines and dismantling to salvage the good parts to resell. We do not rebuild or repair engines, we simply supply parts to people who do! I've left links at the top to reach us about parts.

I really hope you enjoyed this teardown, as always I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!

-Eric

People complain about being broke but then don't maintain perhaps one of the largest purchases they'll ever make. Absolutely upsetting how some car owners take negligence to a whole new level 🤦

To Infiniti and beyond! For the connecting rod.

Nearly fell off my chair at "Supersonic Trumpet"
  • @aderi31415
I don't disagree. This was easily the most blown up engine of the year, so far.
  • @aeroman5239
That one connecting rod that dropped out of the engine when he tapped the piston has been suffering from Peyronie's disease... LOL.
  • @Splitfinger709
I'm sorry Mario, but the wrist pin is in a different oil pan.

This has to have been my favorite 'scientific' test of any you've done. BONK KLANG!

Not only do I love the tear downs with the varying degrees of carnage, but I also enjoy seeing tears downs just to see the myriad of different engineering that have been created to make an engine. The multitude of different configurations is just fascinating. I also love this guy's sense of humor. I am guaranteed a belly laugh at least once every video.
  • 'It's a blood bath in here'. Brilliant description of the carnage in there. Loved this video Eric.

That homemade crankcase ventilation system is beyond impressive, not to mention how it doubles as convenient inspection ports.
  • This engine was driven a fair bit after the intitial bang and the driver was either deaf or happy to keep going until it would go no more. Thanks Eric

The VQ35HR is one of the most robust and best engines from Nissan. It has 360HP and 420lb-ft of torque stock. Mine with upgrades and the Nismo exhaust system I am making 383HP and 430lb-fort of torque. The engine itself has 311HP and 268lb-ft of torque and the hybrid electric motor has 68hp and 214lb-for of torque. The VQ35HR which was originally released in the 2008-2008 Infiniti G35 and Nissan 350Z 2007-2008 was the testing grounds and later the foundation for the VR38DETT in the Nissan GTR. This engine the VQ35HR was also noted and made into a 3.8 liter by Nissan Nismo thus being called the VQ38HR and made 400HP and 311lb-ft of torque Naturally Aspirated.
