Just in time for Switch Sport's 2nd birthday, this is the step by step story of how Nintendo fumbled what could have been the Switch's greatest title. RIP 2022 - 2023

  • basketball just dropped. stupid how it took them 2 years and we have only gotten 2 new sports. and they arent even new. the game still has less sports than resort.

I like how when Switch Sports was announced on that direct, i was so unbelievebly happy until the characters popped on screen and i processed the idea for longer than a second.

Nintendo is losing it's "embracing" identity. Where the wii had comforting menu music and miis, the switch is silent, cold, sterile.
  • They focused so much on online play that they forgot about the sports themselves, the other modes for the sports and the cpus that made the sports more lively. It’s honestly a shame
  • @DeterminedTorres
I knew Switch Sports was a shell of what Wii Sports was by the lack of the ability of throwing the bowling ball backwards to make the Miis jump.

"Ah yes, the brutal consequences of optimism" is my new go to line for whenever Nintendo pulls a Nintendo. This game really just feels like a bad dream. It consumed my life for a few months and then I just moved on and have been happier ever since. I truly hope the words "live service" and "Wii Sports" never get near each other again

Switch Sports is like an abusive lover that extorts you into thinking they'll improve, only to consistently remain shitty for your entire duration with them.

The play test was completely public yet they tried to make it confidential? Did they expect that to work?
  • "Unrealistic nostalgic standards" See here's the problem with that sentiment: They already have the Mii assets Even without Miitopia bumping up the customizability to an absurd degree, the Miis work well enough in general to this day (I wanna shut the Mario Kart Miis up so badly though) that they'd be fine as the main avatars here as well I don't necessarily mind the sportsmates in isolation, but it feels like a case where the focus of initial development was sorely misplaced and wasted as a result, and that's not even taking into consideration the fact that Badminton almost definitely got in to save dev hours

It’s actually so frustrating that this game sold over 10 million units. This is the kinda game that ruins Nintendo’s reputation for casual audiences and I hope consumers actually think before buying games in the future. I can only hope Nintendo’s reaction to this isn’t to release more slop.
  • I've noticed it is a habit for nintendo to allude to free updates and then never deliver. For example: when odyssey came out, everyone thought that their would be a Sunshine DLC because they put it on the loading screen map. There was never a Sunshine DLC. And even more maliciously: When Mario Maker 2 came out, they'd put the only new level style (3D World) under a seperate category titled "Extra Game Styles" with an empty slot for potential future styles. There was never a new style. It sucks that very passionate devs of games like Shovel Knight and No Man's Sky, create so much goodwill behind free updates and then Nintendo completely takes advantage of it for profits.

switch sports (miis) look like stretched out animal crossing characters.
  • Mario Strikers: Battle League is also another title that had a short life and remained an incompleted game
  • @Pheicou
A simple Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort bundle would've sold more than this.
  • @EthanMickanen
This game is actually $60, not 40. You have to pay 40 for the game, and then pay 20 dollars for the Nintendo online just so you can play the game

Me and my bro grew up with a Wii (and thus Wii Sports) so when Switch Sports was announced he was hyped. He got it, played it for 30 minutes, then never touched it again. I think that says a lot when a pretty hype game doesn’t get someone to play it for at least an hour once it launches.

It's weird how the items are just stock and brandless. Like imagine how cool it would be to unlock a Mario hoodie or a Kirby jumpsuit? EDIT: I forgot to mention Super Mario Maker 2 did this right with its collectibles, so I'm not sure why this was missed.
  • If the next console doesn’t include Miis and amiibo functionality, I’m gonna be sad 😭 I just miss when Nintendo had soul.
