Sailing Development Progress Update | Milestone 1: Navigation

Published 2024-05-16
Ahoy there! We’re thrilled to be sharing a much-awaited progress update on Sailing, Old School RuneScape’s first new skill. The team have been busy implementing navigation, making player boats move seamlessly through Gielinor’s open ocean. For more details, check out our blog here! osrs.game/Sailing-M1-Update

Old School RuneScape is a retro game version of RuneScape from 2007 which we returned at the community's request. The community controls the developmental direction of Old School RuneScape by voting on which updates it would like to receive.

The world's largest and most popular MMORPG, Old School RuneScape has been played by over 260 million players since the 2001 release of RuneScape. Old School RuneScape unites the intricate mechanics of modern MMOs with the nostalgic point-and-click gameplay of early role-playing games.

Old School RuneScape is free to download and play, however, the game also offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items. Please see the PEGI information page for more information: pegi.info/search-pegi?q=runescape

Is Ned going to be the Skillcape NPC for sailing?
  • @HavocParadox
It's going to look funky when like 20-30 ships are all at that one salvage spot.

I think if you guys are diligent and bring in testers for feedback quite often you guys can pull it off - it clearly won’t be easy with this community

I'm glad it's not being rushed and actually taking the time to make it good

The devs working on this seem very passionate and excited about this project. Makes me smile to see people who love what they do sharing their passion with us <3

Speaking of draw distance, most players already use the max draw on the GPU plugin of Runelite, but making it even further would be a huge update

Take the time to get it right! If your delay to it right it’s delayed for some time, if you have a bad launch, it’s remembered as a bad launch forever!

For me I think this will make the world feel small, because in reality it is. They only reason we felt it is big was because we couldn't actually see the other islands or anything and trips to other islands seemed a big deal (take dragon slayer for example, it seemed like you traveled quite far). This feels like turning on noclip and flying around the map... ruins many things.

They really put a green pixel on the 73 hit xdd

Now if we get a new version of sea shanty 2 with the skill, that would be epic
  • I hope you add a OSRS version of Easter Island in the future. Would be cool to have this mysterious island with giant sculptures that potentially awake into dangerous foes.

Imagine all the bugs this is going to cause on launch

I remember when this skill was an april fools joke 😂

I'm so thankful for the way they are going about this. Taking their time, keeping us updated, and going really in depth about what the skill can offer. I can't wait to explore the seas and find all sorts of treasure and new PvM and skilling activities.

Honestly, I'm glad you're taking as long as you are. The movement was my personal biggest barrier to the idea of sailing. If the fundamental feeling of sailing is bad, all the rewards in the world wouldn't make me like the skill, so I think investing a lot of time up front on the foundation of movement/navigation is the correct way to do things. Hope it's smooth sailing from here.
