What is the ACTUAL range of a Subaru Solterra?

Published 2023-06-12
How many miles of range does the Subaru Solterra really get? The Subaru Solterra is estimated to have 228 miles of range on a full charge. Climate and driving behavior can drastically change the amount of miles you can drive a Subaru Solterra. In this video, I drive the Solterra for a full week to put it to the test.

I've had an electric car for the past 5yrs and don't have any range anxiety. The whole idea is you get a level2 at home don't need to worry about range if you charge up every night. Going on a long drive stop and charge at 20% fast charge up to 80% easy.

I just purchased a Soltera and for around the city driving it is exceptional. Love the speed, handling and tech is excellent! So far I driven 1256 miles and haven't been to a gas station for nothing more than a gallon of milk

Very interesting video on the driving range for your Solterra. Thank you for sharing your mileage range under various conditions and charging station types.

Really enjoyed this. Thanks for all of the details about charging, mileage, etc.
  • The Solterra seems a large and roomy vehicle. I'm impressed. Thank you for posting the video.

I have just had my Solterra upgraded here in Norway . now the percent is shown on the console and the range for 100% battery is 420 km (252 miles). The value stipulated when I bought this Solterra was 416 km (250 miles). I am therefore satisfied. The car has performed well (as Alex states in his verdict). As for being cautious (nervous) about road trips, well I will embark on my first road trip in a couple of days. I am sure it will go well since I have mapped a number of chargers on the route. Bye the way, the new upgrade permits 4 DC charging (actually 3.86) in a 24 hour period. This is a significant improvement over the former 2.. Bear in mind that the conservative, restrictive control over charging is motivated by a desire on the part of Subaru/Toyota to lower degradation of the battery pack. The present improved restriction is fine by me because I do not see me going over the top with extremely long road trips. Conclusion: very satisfied.
  • It's summer in AZ so it's been in the 90's nearly every day. We use climate control normally. We average about 210 miles indicated on a full charge. Note that the battery "limits" that can be set in the car aren't the actual battery limits. "100%" is actually closer to 80% and "0" is closer to 20%. So you can "fully" charge it each time and the computer maintains the battery. The set scale is to allow you to limit fast charging because it takes so much time to charge from 80% - 90%. I find the quessometer to be pretty accurate. We have a level 2 charger and a super-off-peak rate of $.063/KwH. So we charge about once a week and the electricity is half what the gas cost for our former 47MPG Prius.

Hey Alex, we really enjoy your videos and your info helped us decide to buy our Forester Sport and learn about the features and options. We are expecting delivery of our Sapphire Blue Pearl next week. We have a question about Android Car Play and 2 users. We share the car and are sometimes both in the car. Does this system automatically connect with each start up? Or will we need to connect as users are switched? What happens if we are both in the car? Any tips to make the process easier. Thank you and keep giving us great content.

I would like to know if your test was done in regular or eco mode? You never mentioned it in your video. We bought the Solterra Limited a few weeks ago. I agree with you about the vehicle not being good for road trips but we are retired and have a 2023 Outback Touring for road trips. We plan to use the Solterra for everyday driving. My Grizzl-e level 2 charger cost $350 + tax and I spent $212 to have a 220-240 outlet installed right below my breaker box inside my garage. So, under $600.

Rented one in Seattle and loved the car until it came to charging. I returned it after 2 days of hours of charging efforts at my hotel. Not ready for prime time @ 60 degrees.
  • having the climate on LO and not on auto mode definitely ran the battery down faster as its having to constantly run the compressor

Thanks for these videos the Solterra lease deals are so good I might replace my 2012 Nissan Leaf

Thank you for the review. I still do not know if electric is the answer as environmental effects are just moved not eliminated but I still like to follow the development. Great reviews Alex. I watch often.

Are those charging times correct? Only ask becouse that's not what I heard elsewhere. Changes my decision to purchase greatly.

Will there be more Solterra videos? We have an issue with the initial set up as my husband was the primary driver-they said we had to wait to set me up as the secondary driver-wears still waiting for the dealership to figure this out. As it turns out, I am the primary driver. It is frustrating. Would love more videos.

If you are a two car family, then you can likely have at least one of those cars be this EV without an issue. Subaru should have some recommended guidelines for charging such as the optimal percentage range for daily charging. It depends on the battery chemistry, but you can typically charge every day at on an L2 home charger up to 90% without harming the battery pack.
  • Alex, I very much appreciate your insight into Subarus and all your reviews and information. Does the Solterra navigation system direct you to where chargers are that you would need to stop at on a lengthy trip? I believe Tesla and some others do that. If not, is there a best app that does that and you could suggest? Thank you .

We have a 2023 Solterra touring model. Once in a while when backing out of the garage, the automatic braking or park assist suddenly and violently engages. We can't figure out how to make that stop. My wife is getting tired of having her head bounce off the seat back when she leaves for work. There's nothing behind her, so there's no reason for the brakes to slam on. Any tips to resolve that?

Finally a Solterra video that contains actual nominal range with dashboard information.
