⁉️ 7 Things You Should Do After Buying Your First Gun

A lot of first-time gun owners have no idea what to do next after buying their gun, so I'm here to tell you the 7 things you should do AFTER buying your first gun.

First things first, Learn The 4 Rules of Gun Safety.

Truth be told, you should learn the rules of gun safety before you ever touch a gun much less buy one. These rules should be permanently etched in your brain. Honestly, I could make an entire video about the 4 rules of gun safety and I just might, but in the meantime here are the four rules.

1. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FIREARM POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
2. TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED.
3. KEEP YOUR TRIGGER FINGER OUTSIDE THE GUARD AND OFF OF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE.
4. BE CERTAIN OF YOUR TARGET, YOUR LINE OF FIRE, AND WHAT LIES BEYOND YOUR TARGET.

These rules are a full-proof way to keep you and the people around you safe from firearm negligence so commit these 4 rules to memory and Never break them.

2. Actually Shoot Your Gun / Learn About your Gun

You know who you are. You buy a gun throw it in a drawer and never touch it again. Don’t do this! The first time you shoot your gun should not be when someone is trying to break into your home. This is not only silly it’s dangerous. A gun is a mechanical tool and mechanical tools don’t always work the way you expect them too.

I hate instruction manuals, the microprint on the borderline translucent paper just frustrates me. However, you must learn about your gun, and the best way to do it is on the internet. More specifically, YouTube. The YouTube gun community has been around for a long time and trust me, there is a video on YouTube about your gun.

3. Get handgun self-defense Training

Shooting a gun is easy, shooting a gun accurately is hard. Shooting a gun accurately under stress is hard as hell. However, finding someone that can teach you in a relatively short period is easy.

4. Learn The Laws

That being said, Learn the gun laws in your state. This will do two things. It’ll keep you out of jail and it’ll make you absolutely hate gun laws, because you will now realize how useless they are keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and how effective they are at making harder for you to own a gun.

5. Get a concealed carry license

When i first got into guns and started carrying, the resources that are available now weren’t readily available then. Now, you have organizations like the USCCA which is basically a one-stop shop for everything concealed carry and self-defense with a firearm with the added value of providing you self-defense insurance.

6. Get Firearm Insurance

Yeah, I literally mean insurance. Put simply, if you are a member of USCCA and you have to use your gun in self-defense, they’ll provide the lawyers, bail you out of jail, and help you throughout the criminal and civil court cases you may likely find yourself in.

I’m a lawyer but I’m still a member of USCCA because the wealth of information, training, and just reassurance that have access to legal minds that focus on self-defense law gives me extra security.

Last but not least.

7. Join Second Amendment Rights Organizations

I don’t care who you join even if it’s just a local group, they all need as much help as they can get. They all are important and we need as many well funded 2A organizations as we can get. So try to make an effort to joint at least one 2A organization.

"why did you buy a gun" "to protect my life, liberty and toilet paper"
  • If I might add one more step here. Never let it go. Dont give it up for any reason and also dont tell anyone you dont trust about it. No one you dont trust enough with your life has no business knowing the quantity or nature of your firearms.
  • Don´t let your country take away your right of having firearms... here in Mexico we cannot defend ourselfs... because of two things... people are ignorant about the guns ( you explain it super awesome in your videos) and Politicians! ...thanks... I wish I could enjoy the pleasure and responsbilities of a responsable Gun owner!! keep the good work!!!

Four weapon safety rules: 1) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. (Do not assume that your firearm is unloaded, and do a chamber check when receiving or passing off a weapon) 2) Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. (Be aware of the direction of your barrel at all times, this will keep everyone around you safe) 3) Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire. (If you rest your finger on the trigger, there's a much higher chance that you'll negligently discharge your weapon) 4) Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire. (When applicable, not all weapons have a safety mechanism) Sometimes, a fifth safety rule is also referenced: 5) Know your target and what lies beyond and in-between. (Don't get tunnel vision. If you are shooting a target, is there anything behind it? Pay attention to your surroundings) The first four are generally the most accepted weapon safety rules, the fifth one is also thrown in sometimes. Generally, if an accident occurs, it's because someone broke at least two of the safety rules, if not more.
  • You’re absolutely right man, ever since my first time shooting, i have a different outlook on life. It made me more joyess & calm and reduced my anxiety. Depression was literally spooked off and i felt the need to take hold of my life and become more responsible. now im in the proccess of owning my own firearm!

I know the video is 2 years old, but thank you Colion. I chose to get my LTC and arm myself for sport and recreation with my nephew. However, after talking to many Vets, and sportsman, I understand now how having the ability to defend yourself and your home is very important. I've been a subscriber of yours for some time, and value your content. I appreciate your commitment to 2A rights, and I am a full supporter. Thank you, and God Bless

In Poland we have a convenient abbreviation for gun safety: BLOS (I extend it to BLOSZ). B - from broń (weapon), always treat any of guns as loaded L - from lufa (barrel), never point it at something you're not willing to destroy (unless you have a will to destroy it, then have fun) O - otoczenie (surroundings), be wary of the surroundings of your target S - spust (trigger), keep the finger off it when not willing to fire Z - zabezpieczenie (safety), put it on, especially when not intending to use it in a short amount of time, when need arises or not having an overwatch over it I'm still to young to legally own a firearm out here, but no worries, I'll do my best acquiring a gun permit (because of the specifics of our law it'll be simultaneously on sports shooting and collecting, for more read a Wikipedia page about Polish laws).
  • “Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.” — Lt Col Jeff Cooper (he wrote the 4 rules!) Keep up the good work Colion! Soon we will be quoting you just the same

My boyfriend just bought a pistol and simply walked out of the store with it. I was like, aren’t you going to take a class on how to use it before you load it? No one teaches you anything before you’re allowed to buy a firearm. It’s nuts. Everyone should have to pass a class like getting a driver’s license! And yes YouTube has been priceless to him in learning a lot. Thank you, Colion!

I have martial arts training. At the beginning of Covid I had a nasty accident and almost lost my foot above the ankle. I wanted to go straight to rifles, but getting confident with 9ml concealed weapons has given me some serious confidence. I feel like I have my ninja status back. Thanks for your eloquent delivery on firearms information!

I just bought my first guns at 38 years old. I wasn’t raised with them so I sincerely appreciate you, and people like you, that are creating content to help those of us getting a late start to express our 2nd amendment rights.

I bought my first gun 2 weeks ago. Sig P322, yes I know it’s small but it’s a great training tool for this 58 yr young mom. I have taken two classes so far and will be taking my 3rd class this week. My next possible purchase is the Sig P320 5x Legion that I saw your review on yesterday after trying it out on the range. I’ll continue taking classes. My goal it to get comfortable and good enough to compete. Glad I found your channel.

I've been around guns all my life, I was 14 when I took the hunter safety course. A few years ago I took self defense and CCW classes a big change in confidence and accuracy. Love the video!!
