Sulforaphane promotes detoxification of heavy metals | Jed Fahey

Published 2020-11-24
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that facilitates the body's excretion of a wide range of toxic substances, including pesticides, aflatoxin, and air pollutants. It binds with many of these toxins and forms mercapturic acids, which can be excreted and measured in urine. Sulforaphane promotes the production of glutathione by up-regulating enzymes necessary for its synthesis – and re-synthesis – making more glutathione available to the body's cells. And once glutathione is sacrificed and oxidized, it remakes it. In this clip, Dr. Jed Fahey describes how sulforaphane facilitates the detoxication of heavy metals by increasing glutathione synthesis.

  • Would be interesting to see how sulforaphane and NAC interact. NAC (N- acetylcysteine) also supports the body's production of glutathione - it is one of the amino acids needed, and older people often do not make enough. Glycine is a second amino acid needed, and older people also typically have reduced levels. There's an interesting recent youtube video on glutathione restoration by supplementing with NAC and glycine: look for "Glutathione Restoration Improves Hallmarks of Aging..."

Rhonda, thanks so much for the short clips of this interview. When I watched the entire interview it was like trying to drink from a fire hose. These short clips allow me to digest each important issue. Again thank you for what you are doing.

I am interested to know more about the ability of sulforaphane in assisting with detoxification of heavy metals, specifically accumulated heavy metals. My understanding is that once metals have "settled" and are deeply embedded into the bone marrow, they are very difficult (and dangerous) to stir up and move. I am very interested and would be extremely grateful, Rhonda Patrick, if you can bring us more info on this subject.
  • Valencia peanut butter has less mold (aflatoxin). Trader Joe's is expensive but it's worth it. Always LIGHTLY heat your broccoli sprouts and sprinkle some mustard powder on them. You will get maximum absorbsion.
  • Is there a difference between glutathione acquired via sulphurophane consumption and simply consuming NAC or glutathione directly.

Do you have practice problems on the chemistry of metals in the brain? Or could direct me where to find them? This would be very helpful for self-study and further understanding of this field
  • I lost my eyebrows a few years ago and I thought it was an auto-immune disorder but ever since I started on Keto 5 years ago it's been nonstop chocolate protein powder, Atkins' shakes, sugar-free chocolate, coffee, Coke Zero, and everything is loaded with heavy metals including the weed I smoke at night. How much sulforaphane would I need to detox? Will we ever be a lead-free society? Sadly, not in my time. :face-red-droopy-eyes::face-purple-crying::face-fuchsia-tongue-out:

How much sulphoraphane, how many mgs can be given to a 26 pound , 20 month old to help with symptoms of autism?
  • Will sulforiphane detoxify lead from the body? My 7 year old got a letter from the school today saying they shut down the water due to high lead. He's been drinking that water for 2 years and has symptoms of lead poisoning. Any info would be appreciated.

Will I get same level of sulfurophane when blending or juicing cabbage or bok choy?
