Lyrics:

Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'd rock you 'til the daylight comes
Made sure you are smiling and warm
I am everything, tonight, I'll be your mother
I'll do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind, and you won't feel ashamed
Shucks, for me there is no other
You're the only shoe that fits
I can't imagine I'll grow out of it
Damn, I wish I was your lover

  • Once upon a time, I recorded this song on a blank cassette tape and mailed it to my love, with no name. He guessed it was me and said that he hoped it was. For 30 years now he is and always will be my sweetest love, my best friend, my husband and soulmate and of course my lover.

was wooed by a pretty girl singing this to me at a party, and ended up with 5 glorious years before breast cancer took her, love you Kathy, R.I.P
  • The song from the summer I spent in Oregon as an exchange student. I am 50 now. Hello from Moscow

Living in a world I don't even understand or recognise and my only comfort is looking back at these old videos
  • Dedicated this song to my husband back in 1992 when I was 17. Married in 1995 and just celebrated our 24th year anniversary. This sing still gets it.

Good Lord...the background music....the scene, her voice....wow...this was a masterpiece.

Like so many things, I didn't much appreciate this band on their arrival, this song included. Some 30 plus years later, spending a decade chasing the frisson dragon, this song hits an amazing sweet spot. Sophie B does this so damn well, with a talented ensemble. Proving yet again, the 90s was the best possible decade for music!
  • THIS time period, the early to mid nineties, was when female singers were a force to be reckoned with. Sophie Hawkins, Alanis Morissette, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Gwen Stefani, the talent was practically falling out of the sky...
  • I miss the emotional exhibitionism of the 80’s/90’s. What a time to be alive !

Don’t you love stumbling across a song long forgotten just to realize how awesome it was?
  • My father was a huge Sophie fan. He passed away on 08-29-2023 and I am making a play list of his favorite songs. This is one of them.

I live in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston, and worked at a book shop across from Mary's bar, back in the day. I wish you all could have been there for the annual "Easter Bonnet Parade", the Drag Races (short 1k & 2k races where all participants ran in heels and full drag), the rooftop Sumo wrestling matches, and Sophie B. Hawkins singing this from the rooftop of Mary's bar with her full band backing her up as thousands of us, gay, straight, and whatever, danced and sang. It was glorious fun! ❤

I love that initial chord progression. It gets my heart in a state of whoosh
