Does the gas mileage in your car or truck seem to be getting worse? Check your mass airflow sensor and these other air intake parts to make sure your engine is running as efficiently as possible! In this video, Andy shows you the key parts of the air intake system, how they can fail, and what you can do about it! The mass airflow sensor measures the volume of air entering your car or truck's engine. If airflow is reduced from a dirty air filter, if air measurement is incorrect or flaky from a bad sensor, if a throttle body sticks, if an intake plenum is leaking, your engine might be wasting fuel to compensate!

Old Spark Plugs and dirty Air Filters are usually the 2 main culprits and fairly cheap to replace.
  • My 2004 BMW 325i only got 15 MPG since I bought it 5 years ago. I cleaned the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR and I'm getting around 30+ now!!! (It never threw a fault code for anything. Including Oxygen Sensors.)
  • Thanks yall. I truly learned from this. The way you break things down and explain your car part by part is greatly appreciated.

As mentioned, be very careful if you pull the throttle body. Take a picture of where the butterfly valve is setting before attempting to clean. A LOT of modern and even '06 models do not have an absolute position sensor to determine where the butterfly valve actually is. They use an indirect position sensor, and if you move it, and then replace the TB, it will think it is in the original position and adjust it programmatically from there. You may end up needing to get it towed into a shop, or have to replace the unit entirely. Sometime the re-tune steps mentioned will not be able to correct.

Also change your air filter. My Hyundai fuel "Range" was always around 400 miles after a fill-up. I noticed it dropped to around 360 to 370. Changed air filter and it took about 5 or 6 fill-ups and now it is back to 400. Measured mpgs and went from around 31 up to 35 mpg with just a $20 air filter.

As luck would have it, this video came just when I started noticing my car is consuming more fuel than normal.

That was very good intel on the TB. I didn't know that. I had to clean the TB on my 02 Tundra (4.7L) and I did it without removing the unit. I sprayed and scrubbed a pretty good amount of carbon from the inside with minimal deflection of the butterfly valve. The old donkey ran great after that with no ill effects from my amateurish cleaning technique. Now that I know better I will do better. Great job and very informative.

Love the content. I have a 2005 Honda accord that if I don't let it idle for about 10 minutes after starting it will kind of stall out when try to accelerate

Thanks for this video. Iā€™m curious.. What if you have a MAP sensor? Can it be cleaned like a MAF sensor can?
  • I luv this video because we recently replaced the Mass Air Flow and the 2 o2 sensors on my 2008 chevy hhr
  • @samgentaro
Thanks for this useful video. You guys are great.
  • Thanks for the video, I have a question, is there any MAF sensor for Grand Cherokee 2014 ? Best regards

Every time Gas goes up you see tons of gadgets for sale, guys selling stuff and Tweeks to your car for better gas mileage. As illustrated...new air filter, correct tire pressure, maybe new belts. Most of all ..good driving ....see cars wiz by me then brake hard for the light. Always in a hurry ....then start quick from the light .... Driving 80-90 on the freeway...see that all the time... Great video....good info!

I always buy OEM replacement parts from car dealers in other states online at a cheaper price compared to my local car dealer.

Also be aware that plastic intake is more noisier, you can hear the air rushing through, don't assume an air leak with out verifying it
