Activate Windows. A surprisingly frequent appearance on Linus Tech Tips. But why would we pirate Windows? Will Microsoft sue us?

Someone: Changes pc case. Microsoft: i've never seen this man in my life
  • @khoipham1657
Basically it's like this: -Changing new hardware -Windows: "A platypus?" -Put old hardware back -Windows: "Perry the Platypus???"
  • @placyd
Computer user: *changed their RGB fan * Microsoft: Who the heck are you? *rips their license*

I really don’t get why, but this is one of my favourite LTT videos. The pent up passive aggression, probably, it’s just timeless.
  • @lxcy.
should've put "Activate Windows" at the bottom right of the screen, for the whole video.

Everyone gangsta until Linus actually reads the EULA
  • @afishynado6812
The harder software firms make it to be legit, the more it drives people to piracy.
  • @mave7.
The watermark can be removed run>regedit>h_kay_local_machine>system>curentcontrolreset>service>svsvc>start > and set the value data from 3 to 4

Once, I changed my computer parts, resulting in my windows key vanishing despite me not changing any storage... I left the activate windows thing for like over a year and eventually it disappeared on its own 0.0
  • @Slipfox_xyz
The reason that the PC you used kept Windows active was because you had the same thermal paste on.

Windows: still activated after linus replaces the motherboard Linus: you weren't supposed to do that
  • @MusicNerdMIDI
Windows has been making it more difficult to boot with windows without a key. For Windows 11, they removed the "skip" and "I don't have internet" options while starting up, essentially forcing you to enter a key. There's actually a task manager workaround for that, but it baffles my mind!

The way Linus introduces his sponsors makes me feel like I'm living in the Truman show.

someone: swaps a ram stick. microsoft: WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE
  • @timthomas9105
I had that problem in the 80's & 90's. While building a lot of systems and swapping boards, drives and memory in and out of my personal tower. Back then it wasn't a watermark. It was more intrusive. And I forget which version it was but it was a big window popup that kept coming back.

The reactivation asks: "what pc is this" and prompts you to select your pc from a list with pc's from your account
