Workday Wednesday: Bucket Mouse Trap

Shawn puts together a giant mouse trap using a 5 gal bucket, a metal rod, a torch to heat metal rod, PVC cut to size, two wooden slats, two screws and peanut butter (water optional).

As of editing this video we already caught one mouse!

Worked for me, thanks! I used weed trimmer string and 1/2" PVC. Made 3 traps, first night caught 2 in the shed, 1 in the greenhouse and 1 in the garage. Don't use much peanut butter or else they fill up and get away. The harder they work for it, the more chance they have of falling in.
  • If you put some dish soap on the water the fleas that are on the mice will not be able to get out

I built one like that over 30 years ago. Instead of a piece of PVC pipe, I used a plastic hair spray bottle. It keeps my garage clear of mice. They can do some serious damage to a car in a very short period of time.
  • Just a tip if the “liquid mouse killer” is to be left for any length of time, use left over vegetable oil so the bodies do not decompose and smell.

Pretty cool but if you live by a field and invest in a barn owl nest box or build your own, the breeding pair will consume at least 2000 mice in one chick rearing season. Talk about eliminating Lyme disease vectors.

I would like to have seen the results of the mouse trap the next day.

2 foot long electric saw to cut that wire? in australia we use plier wire cutters
  • We have done that before. Most recently we had chicken feed in a bucket fermenting in the garage. Several times we came in and found a dead mouse in the bucket. We are not sure how they got in because there was no way up except flying or climbing up the bucket. But we found several mice several different days.
  • New subscriber here thanks for the trap design! God bless! Tony n Lee Ann

It's a pretty efficient mouse trap design. I'm subscribed to a channel where the guy shows a different mouse trap or two every week and this method certainly rates highly in his recommendations. I hope you caught lots of mice!
  • Have used this in garage in winter just put antifreeze in the bucket.
