A GR86 without a manual seems just wrong.

Even though the successor to the LFA will not have a V10, that 4.0L V8 sounds pretty juicy as well. A very nice deep, menacing grumble.
  • As far as I remember, the Lexus LFR or Toyota GT3 concept that was tested in Nurburging last week was intended to be used in the GT3 class at WEC 2025/2026, whereas according to existing regulations, to be able to take part in the GT3 event at WEC it must be based on a car that is sold to the public ( legal road cars)

GR86 rumors have been floating around since the introduction of the GR Corolla. It's not happening. A hybrid is 100% not happening with the current platform. Best Car is off the mark - again.
  • Toyota/Lexus should definitely double down on hybrids for the next 5-10 years, but they are getting way too expensive....

I think with the less kids being born these days that coupes are going to be making a comeback for those people who don't need four doors, four seats, etc.

I love high displacement V8s but Porche is doing something interesting with making a hybrid turbo. Basically they sandwich an electric motor between the intake and exhaust impellers to insta-spool the turbo before the exhaust pressure builds, so you can (this isn't what they're doing) have a small, high strung turbo 4cyl with a bunch of turbo lag, but fill in the low end with electric motor and/or spool MUCH quicker with an (as Garrett call it) e-turbo. I could see Honda maybe doing something with an e-turbo mild hybrid coupe in the nearish future. They're new and very expensive right now, but I see no reason why they shouldn't come down in price as the newness fades.
  • Can't believe we all slept on the LFA. There were still unsold units on dealer lots 2.5 years after production ended.

I hope I see the MR2 come back but it needs to be done right. 1991-95 was always my personal favorite.

Is it just me or do all of these cars look scarily similar. I'm all for modern designs but brand identity is important too...
  • @matw1x
Both upcoming Lexus coupes look beautiful

Kirk: magazine info is questionable Also Kirk: I'm going to spread it anyways

We need that Lexus Twin Turbo V8
  • I love my Chevrolet convertible C8, but I would give it up in a second if Toyota or Lexus built a 500hp+ 2 seat sporty convertible.

The hole point of the GR86 low cost, low weight, high purity sports car (with Manual). I'm not interested in another 36K+ car I can't afford.
  • @nicks1137
Any news on the MR2 or Celica? ....kind of hard to believe they would bring these in given their current line up....

I think the hybrid system for the GR86 will be a mild hybrid. The iForce Max powertrain adds 350-400 lbs of weight which on a light sports car is a huge amount of weight. Toyota recently launched the 48V mild hybrid system for the Hilux and it adds around 35 kg (~80 lbs) while providing a 12kW(~16hp) and 65N.m(~48lb.ft) boost from a small motor and lightweight battery. Since this system uses a belt-driven motor generator it also allows the use of a manual transmission. It will also be cheaper for an entry-level sports car.

That V8 will permeate throughout the lineup in a very detuned form. The V10 didnt make sense and too expensive and outdated by the time it came out. With the Germans restarting dev on V8s, Lexus needs this.
