Roblox Dating App is Horrible

Imagine having a game that is fairly known for its problem with predators lurking for kids and then having the brilliant idea of making a dating app for that community.

Adding a dating site to a game with an audience being primarily children is a disaster waiting to happen

Imagine being brought into existence because your parents met on Roblox dating

I'm honestly shocked that it's even legal to make a dating app that allows 17 year olds.

Saw this on Twitter earlier, for once everyone seemed to be in agreement that this is a really bad idea

As a 27yr old who regularly plays roblox with my late-20s friends, there’s already so much creepiness on roblox. I’ve seen so many roblox-couples. I’ve heard a grown man and literal child talking (in voice chat, which requires ID but plenty of 8yr olds have) and saying they were best friends until I was like “oh are you her dad?” And he muted himself. I’ve seen people asking for Snapchat info from people who I’m guessing are children based on how they talk. Adding a dating functionality to roblox just sounds like a breeding ground for people who “just want cupcakes”

there is no way predators didnt come up in the meeting discussing this idea. yet they STILL went through with it.

I cant stress this enough but the pedo problem is so much worse than anyone outside the roblox community could ever realise, like as somebody active in the community its literally just the norm to hear about somebody in any roblox community being exposed as a pedo, doing this is a huge dangerous mistake and I dont know what the hell they are thinking

This is disgusting. To take a platform that largely involves children, and now trying to make it a dating app is despicable.

The amount of alarm bells going off in my head is crazy. This is a horrific move for a platform that is pretty well-known to protect predators despite pretty damning evidence, and I'm actually really worried about this making the issue of grooming nearly unmanageable. While I hope they reverse course, part of me knows they won't, and that scares me a lot.

As an adult playing Roblox, and knowing some other adults who play as well, I can confidently say that NONE of us asked for this. NONE of us want this. The only adults who would want something like this are degenerate predators so they don't have to work as hard to get their prey. This is probably the single worst decision this company has made in its entire history. Truly shameful and disgusting.

The fact that Roblox is literally doing anything but protecting the main audience that plays their game is actually horrifying because once kids figure out how to bypass the security in place children on roblox will get groomed way more often

I appreciate Charlie immediately talking about how relationships sprouting from gaming is not a bad thing and shouldn't be considered weird. I had a teacher who met her husband through playing WoW together and they were such a cute couple. It's unfortunate that the idea of meeting someone in a game and later forming a relationship is considered weird. They are literally playing the same game as you so right off the bat you have something in common. It's always romantic relationships that are the ones considered weird as well. I met one of my best friends through GTA V and I ended up going to his wedding as one of his groomsman years later and no one questioned it. His whole family was so excited to finally meet me, I was known as the "guy from the game" and they all treated me as family. 😂

I am 30 years old and I play Roblox, while I've met a few adults there (one being one of my best friends to this day), I can confirm that 90% of the player base are kids. And I agree with you, acting sexual on any game should be frowned upon, take it to a private discord conversation. I feel like they're desperately trying to appeal to an adult audience because Roblox games are very predatory, they constantly shove on your face that you need to spend money to get this cool advantage so you can level up more quickly, also a lot of gachas too. So I think they're trying to move away from being a children's game so they can get more adults willing to spend money on their game.

Making it 17+ instead of 18+ makes it way easier for Roblox to deal with the law. Instead of it being strictly an adult space which have legal precedents it is just a space tailored to older teens. Roblox now will not be held at the standard of exposing children to adult content and having the authorities involved. Instead they now can just say that "there are just some creepy people in the space and we are doing our best to get rid of them." Very sinister for them to do this.
