The devastation and destruction rained down on Ukraine by the Russian forces has taken many civilian lives.

President Putin insists that only military targets are being attacked but many ordinary people, often trying to flee the violence, have been killed.

How that happens was made terrifyingly clear to one of our Sky News teams reporting from there this week.

Russian forces were nowhere to be seen as Stuart Ramsay’s team carefully drove through a town near Kiyv on Monday afternoon.

But, without warning, they came under heavy and sustained gunfire from what the Ukrainians believe to be a Russian reconnaissance squad.

Incredibly Stuart, his producers, Dominique Van Heerden, Martin Vowles and Andrii Lytvynenko and his camera operator Richie Mockler escaped with their lives.

Sky News has decided to tell the story of what happened to show the sheer scale of the mayhem and violence as the Russian invasion enters a new, and very deadly phase. The team are now safely back in the UK.

The fact no one was killed is a miracle, bullets were probably inches from being critical hits, absolutely insane footage.

A car is not a tank. The people inside were not Ukrainian soldiers. Imagine what every civilian and neighbor must feel as they drive down a street or walk down it. Yep, nice "peace keepers" all right.

This is an absolutely unforgettable moment in journalism and the war in Ukraine

“I think we need to get out of here”. The biggest understatement i’ve heard in my life.

Targeting innocent people, they knew what they were doing. What cowards.

Quite shocked that this is on YouTube from a news reporter point of view. Stay safe, have your head on a swivel and look after each other.

That is probably the most brave and accurate report I've ever seen....I'm amazed at how composed everyone is while being shot at. The consummate professionals.

The terror in that man's voice when he didn't hear them say something back after asking where they were. F*cking terrifying. Luckily everyone made it out alive.
  • Thanks for not leaving us hanging and telling us that everyone was rescued and okay. It was a nail biting report. The horrors of war are real. May this crisis be resolved quickly!

hearing those whistling shots and even the red streaks and ricochets is absolutely insanely close. this is unreal footage and even crazier no one was killed. That car was was like a cardboard box to those rounds.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to the brave journalists who risk their lives to bring the truth to the world

I used to not be able to fully comprehend how people got PTSD when coming back from battle field. This clip has put me in a first person perspective and partially experienced the shock, the terror, the pain and the helplessness those people must have been through. This war must be stopped!
  • One of the most terrifying thing I have seen and at the same time one of the finest pieces of journalism. I have the utmost respect for Stuart (who still kept commentating) and his team for their unquestionable dedication. I'm glad the survived and are safely home.
  • This happened in the early days of the invasion. I remember watching this same video several times. Was happy to see them all finding a safe place to hide
  • The danger these reporters put themselves in to get the information out of war zones is just craziness. So glad they are all ok. Praying for everyone in Ukraine.
