Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday.

In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans "want nothing" to do with the bill.

"I concede," he said, adding that he will not sign the bill into law.

At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).

Kenyans don't mind paying the taxes by the way, but it hurts when the money the extra tax burden is wasted and politicians steal it. If Kenyans make the sacrifices of paying the debt then politicians should also make sacrifices and cut down on wasteful expenses, and decrease their bloated salaries. Africa is very Rich ans under valued, by the way.
  • He must resign! Betrayed people’s trust and killed lots of innocent lives
  • Yet over here in Canada we are far too weak and scared to attempt something like this

The people of Kenya shouldn't have to go on the street protesting or lost their life for President Ruto to do the right thing. He and his party need to go.
  • A very big setback for Zakayo. Kenyans are now emboldened by this pushback. Ruto must go.
