"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" is the most realistic version of the game yet. The first-person shooter game has incorporated methods of photogrammetry and performance capture to transport our world into the world of "Modern Warfare," scanning in everything from Ghost's mask to fully-costumed characters. The team even distresses its costumes in real life to add naturalistic wear and tear to the military gear in the game. And it creates and scans real miniature models to stand in for BattlePass's emblem and rewards. We visited Infinity Ward's studio in LA to find out how the developer continues pushing the boundaries of realism and immersion in video games.

  • Photogrammetry is in part why the game takes 160+ gb on the ssd.

It’s absolutely incredible that ALL of this effort and time go into making literally 1 video game and this is just one part of the game. Then you have the whole story line that needs to be created, the gameplay itself, characters, multiplier etc. insane. Hats off!
  • Fun fact, the actor who plays the General is named Glenn. He was on the board of my film school in Dallas. Really nice guy with a huge heart. Loved learning from him.

Normally Insider covers alot of niche topics, food or art. I love seeing Insider videos but I never thought I'd see a MWII video on Insider and I'm absolutely here for it. I adore MWII and seeing these props is interesting and covers parts of the process people didnt know about or overlook. I thought that MWII was made off of digitally sculpted models originally, but seeing that they have physical props for his outfit and mask is fascinating

It's been interesting to see over the last decade; Developers are no longer trying to recreate real life through creating textures and models manually. It's become the norm among AAA studios to use performance capture and scans of practical props/characters. It's an exciting time where we get to see truly photorealistic games.
  • This was beautiful. To all the artists, designers, engineers, prop masters, and crew that worked together to make this game look and sound amazing - thank you.

Imagine you've spent the last three years of your life putting such an incredible amount of effort into making this one of the most authentic-looking and sounding military shooters ever, only to look over at the intern's computer and see them modelling a cat/human hybrid names Sgt. Pspspsps

The cutscenes in this franchise are so photorealistic that some shots blur the boundary of real vs fake. It is really impressive, perhaps one day we’ll have that level of fidelity in game and not pre-rendered.

we have reached a point where visuals arent the limitations its the creativity of devs.

as a Latin American The way Las Almas was so thoughtfully loyal to a north Mexican city that I got into a photography tour during the "Alone" mission. Gorgeous altogether. Bravo team <3

Alejandro was my favorite performance of the game, absolutely awesome how real the character feels because of all the detail

Impressive how much effort goes into this. If only the gameplay and technical aspects had this level of passion. I prefer gameplay over graphics, but the effort here is still commendable and the art team is truly gifted.

8:59 That's the real-life sized statue of Ghost when the LAPD responded to a panic button at an Infinity Ward office (One of their designers didn't think about what would happen to the button, so he instinctively pressed it) and had a standoff with that same statue because it looked like a heavily armed man facing backwards. If that is really the original one....
  • @AS.Se7en
They did a great job with graphics
  • @Carsten_Hoett
I knew the technique of photogrammetry before is actually popular for ages in reconnaissance. I am still super astonished how these pieces of software are working in the background, especially as there is also some freeware available. But the effort in these Games are also insane
  • @fireaza
I was about to say, it seemed a bit goofy to scan a miniature like that one into the game, so it didn't look terribly realistic. But doing that to use it as a menu item is a pretty clever idea, it lends it a sorta diorama look. I like it!
