This song is the first track and the title track on the 1971 Jethro Tull album titled 'Aqualung'.

Lyrics:

Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent
Snot running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes
Hey, Aqualung
Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run
Hey, Aqualung
Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck
Whoa, Aqualung

Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely
Taking time the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog and warms his feet
Feeling alone, the army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung my friend, don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see, it's only me

Do you still remember
December's foggy freeze?
When the ice that
Clings on to your beard was
Screaming agony (Hey!)
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
With deep-sea-diver sounds
And the flowers bloom like
Madness in the spring

Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely
Taking time the only way he knows
Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog and warms his feet
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Feeling alone, the army's up the road
Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea
Aqualung my friend, don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see, it's only me
Me-me-me-me-me
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

[Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
Dee-dee-dee-dee
Dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee
Dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee
Dee-dee-dee-dee
Aqualung, my friend, don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see, it's only me

Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent
Snot running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes
Hey, Aqualung
Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run
Hey, Aqualung
Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck
Hey, Aqualung

[Outro]
Whoa, Aqualung

Aqualung, the album” to many, is Tull’s masterpiece. The title track and “Locomotive Breath,” with their catchy riffs, would be joined by “My God,” “Cross-Eyed Mary,” and “Hymn 43” as classic rock staples. There’s no arguing with its commercial success, having sold more than seven million copies and continuing to outsell anything in the back catalog.

  • Jethro Tull was one my dad's favorite bands. When I was a kid, he would CRANK their songs to 11. It was the most passionate I ever saw him be. May he rest knowing that he bore a son who loves these guys.

Ian Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Robert Plant, Greg Lake, Keith Emerson, Jimmy Page... an incredible generation of musicians. I love them.

68 years old and still listening to music of the greats in 2024
  • Thank you Mr. Anderson for your kindness towards less fortunate folks like myself. I've been homeless and I'm a recovering alcoholic. I am Aqualung. God bless Ian Anderson.

I seen Jethro Tull live! Proco Harum opened up for Tull. Great live show! Ian Anderson dressed in a janitors overalls and was mopping the stage then the band started and the curtin opened ......then TULL tore open the mop handle and inside of the handle was his flute...What a show! Damn I'm old. Hahaha

One of the best guitar solos ever recorded in my opinion.

I'm 67 years old now. This brings back so many awesome memories from my childhood. I bought the album "Stand Up" when it first came out in July '69. I was mesmerized. A week later I went to the store and purchased "This Was". I was 12 years old. Tull was my favorite band. "Benefit", "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" were all incredible albums. In April 1972, my best friend and I rode our bikes to the Forum in Inglewood, CA to buy tickets for the "Thick as a Brick" concert. On 23 June, 1972, we again rode our bikes to The Forum to watch the concert. It was the greatest day of my life to that point. It was the concert of a lifetime. Great music, unbelievable musicianship...even a lot of humor! Ian Anderson is a genius. And I felt like the luckiest guy in the world!

Ian is the classist musician, I ever met. In Tucson 1978 we sat and talked. shared a joint. As he was leaving to start the concert, he turned and gave me one of his joints. I should have saved it retrospectively.

My Mom was a big Tull fan when she was pregnant with me. Ian is my middle name after Mr. Anderson. I'm very honored & proud. Aqualung is one of my top ten all time favorite albums. They are so unique & talented. Each & every member. Phenomenal rock band. Right up there with Rush, Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Doors, & Pink Floyd.
  • 61years old woman..50 years with Aqualung..thank you IAN..scottish GENIUS..
  • "The Army's up the road; salvation 'a la mode,' and a cup of tea." Is absolutely brilliant.

My dad was born in 1954, he don't know english so well, but he say me that when hear these music dreamin' and feel free. He passed away in 2015 and missed me so much.
  • Saw Tull in concert on the Jersey shore one summer. With my first wife. Who knew that life would be blown away and I would spend time broke, alone and on the road! Seeing the world with a new set of eyes. Years have gone by. I am sitting on a country hill, housed, well fed, loved and protected. Proud to say I have spent my life helping others as an EMT, firefighter, public investigator. I have seen the world thru Aqualung’s eyes.
  • One of the GREATEST songs ever made. A true masterpiece!
  • @johnrudd9610
Aqualung is the kind of song that when you hear it on the radio you stop what ever you are doing for the next 6.30 minutes and just enjoy it
  • My high school rock band learned Aqualung back in 1972, my sophomore year. Took us all day one Saturday. But when we thought we had it, we were really proud of such an achievement. I just wish we had videos. Anderson is one of the greatest composers of all time and will eventually be ranked as such.

My dad passed away this past October and Jethro Tull was one of he's favorite bands. As a teenager he would play this song for me and to this day I'm still a fan of it. RIP dad, miss you 💙
