Pfaff first met Eric and Courtney at a 4th of July party in Minneapolis - 1991. They weren't complete strangers, but Courtney's reputation for raging already preceded her. Kristen had a long discussion with her dad in 1993 about joining Hole, Norm suggested she join as a career building move. In addition, both Eric and Courtney were on their best behavior, persuasive and charming until the first few band practices in Seattle.

Kristen Pfaff spent much of 1993 drying her clothes near the heater in her apartment. The Seattle weather that year was especially rainy and cold, and her discomfort only added to the regret of joining Hole. Between mid '93 and '94, Kristen had: Joined Hole and relocated to Seattle. Toured Europe with Hole. Recorded "Live Through This" in Atlanta. Developed a drug habit. Was hospitalized for Cellulitis due to an infected injection. Spent a month in rehab at Hazelden Center in Minnesota. Attended the funeral for Kurt Cobain. Rejoined her original band Janitor Joe for a 5 week tour of Europe. Returned to Seattle to gather her belongings and move back to Minneapolis.

By the second band practice, Kristen realized she was a far better musician than Courtney and Eric. Patty was a terrific drummer, noting that Kristen's playing immediately made the band sound like a professional group. Nonetheless, Kristen's musical suggestions were immediately dismissed by Courtney, supported by Eric who never wanted to "rock the boat". "Don't complain, being in a band with Courtney will make you a lot of money". Despite these claims, Kristen was paid as a salaried employee, just like Patty.
